Hustle Hard

BlaccTopp’s “The Hustle Chronicles” is a promising debut. Starting with the past and working its way through time, it tells the tale of the Gage family. Ultimately the story of Julius Gage Jr. specifically. Like father like son, young Julius is ambitious and the streets of South Dallas are his playground. He soon finds out the past is never really the past.

I enjoyed “The Hustle Chronicles.” The characters were interesting and the storyline entertaining. It was a visual story. The author provided enough for readers to play out in their minds.

I applaud the author for utilizing editors. Two to be exact. But I urge him to use editors in the future whose skills go beyond simply finding misspelled words and glaring typos as there was an absolute over usage of quotation marks for emphasis, punctuation after closing quotation marks and modifiers missing hyphens. Spelman University was misspelled repeatedly as Spellman. The editing seemed to get worse as the book progressed. With two ‘editors,’ that’s simply unacceptable.

Not one for sequels, trilogies or series as most aren’t necessary, in this case I’d be interested in seeing what comes of young Julius and this cast of characters. Again, a promising debut by BlaccTopp.

Quote: "...Don't try to be me, baby; be better than me."

Being that this isn't the first book I've read from this author, yet it's the first book he ever published, I was able to see his growth as a writer from then to now.

The characters in this story were extremely well developed. I loved Naje' the most yet I hated her gullibleness at times. Booty Green was the only character in the story that left me emotionally conflicted. I hated him for what he did, yet I still felt a slight bit of remorse for him. I felt like his past sins never gave him a chance at redemption and he couldn't help who he fell in love with.

I hated both Rabbit and Yellow Shoes with a passion! I can't wait to see them get what they've got coming to them. Chele's situation was an unfortunate one, yet she knew what she'd gotten herself into. My heart truly hurt for Charlie Boy and I'm truly intrigued with Devon and his mystique.

Overall, this was a really good read and I can't wait to see what becomes of these characters! There were a few errors/typos but they didn't take anything away from the storyline. This book is definitely worth the read!

The Gage Family

I have had this book for awhile & finally got around to reading it. Now I'm pissed that it took me so long to get to it! This was definitely a book that I didn't want to end. Drugs, murder, lies, set-ups… you name it, it is in this gritty South Dallas tale. I think what truly drew me in was the fact that I now live in Dallas but I was born and raised in Arkansas. It was like I could really relate because I know the places that the events took place in. This was my first read by Blacc Topp but it will definitely not be my last!

Just finished reading "The Hustle Chronicles", by the Novelist Blacc Topp and I must say he kicked the door wide open, dropped the mike and walked away to leave us hungering for part two of this novel! For this to be his first time out box, he kicked ass. This book was so well written with suspense building with the turn of each page. Once you get started, you will not be able to put it down. So feed the kids, get your snacks and find a nice place to relax, cause your going to be there for a while.

This book was filled with many lessons (Loyatly, Respect, Love, Betrayal and Choices) that were taught and then learned by a young Julius. Lessons from a father to a son, which would mold the character of a young Julius as to how to handle business on the streets; Lessons from a mother who stressed that education was essential in order to have a future that wasn't in the streets; Loyalty from a friend who was willing to put everything on the line to protect his friendship with Julius. Love and development of relationships with family who were basically non existent and disloyalty and betrayal from a friend who was envious of the respect that Julies gained in the streets.

Julius father and uncle were legends during their time and there were those who still held resentment for the Gage boys long after their demise. The Sins of the Father are now bestowed on the child is what comes to mind when the enemies of the father target the son.

I found myself rooting for Julius Gage's success. I was shocked at some of the revelations but cannot wait to find out how this will end. I will definitely be looking out for "The Hustle Chronicles II".

Kudos to the Novelist BlaccTopp for producing an excellent piece of work.

Excellent book! Novelist Blacc Topp tells with great skill the story of the Gage family through Julius Jr's childhood as a gangbanger following in his legendary father's example. There are twists and turns with a variety of characters that either love J or hate him. The ending is surprising and leaves an open wound in Gage's plans to complete his takeover of South Dallas' underworld. I certainly will follow up with as many sequels as the Novelist Blacc can write of this gripping urban saga. Book 2 is to entertain my curiosity about how J will overcome being arrested for a murder he was framed for on the day he graduates from high school, how his beautiful lover Angelica will handle being pregnant thru this ordeal, how his mother Naje and his long-absent brother Devon will use their wits to help J beat this innately cruel wrong turn. I look forward to even more from Novelist Blacc Topp's pen.

Julius Jr had a hell of a legacy to live up to. His father was know for being a major force in the streets, and it was up to Julius to make his own way in the world after his father was betrayed and murdered.

As this story unfolds, Julius learns many "lessons from the grave." He and his mother find themselves in the middle of chaos no one would have predicted. He fights to stay on top, though, always three steps ahead of the game. Julius maintains a level head, keeping focused on the game, even when love knocks at his door.

There are many plot twists, many times you think "I didn't see THAT coming," and many times you have to pause & reread a passage like "whoa!". This book gives the term page turner new meaning.

Little did I know, I would embark on a suspenseful ride of twists and turns. I immediately fell in love with his writing, the story and the characters. Especially, Julius Sr. and Julius Jr. Their bond was special and touching.

Novelist Blacc Topp does an extraordinary job of evoking emotion as well as conveying the inner workings of the mind and heart of his characters. His writing style is raw, sensual and thought provoking.

This was an easy read. I couldn't put it down until completed. I knew every street/area mentioned in the street life of Ju-Ju Bean. The back stabbing, two timing, double crossing characters kept you interested and wanting for the truth to be discovered. The hope of wanting a happy ending only to be left waiting for the 2nd book... The moral of the story is "trust no one"!

I gotta get the 2nd book!

Novelist Blacc Topp has weaved a story that will grab your attention from the first page, where we are introduced to the Gage family. Young Julius had witnessed more in his few years than many have seen in their lifetime. When his family is murdered, there is a sleeping lion that awakes inside of him that is unstoppable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and only or it down when necessary. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the sequel.

Great crime fiction! This book was written in classic crime fiction style and I enjoyed it from start to finish. I felt like I was watching a movie as the story took me through different time periods and a southern environment that was completely foreign to me. The Gage boys are in a class of their own and so is this author. Highly recommended.
