I was indecisive on how many stars to rate this book. I appreciate the idea & the effort of making a collection of so many black women writers from such a long time span. I enjoyed seeing the evolution of subject matter & writing styles. Some of the individual stories I would rate a five star and a few only a one star, which is likely typical of a collection of short stories by different authors.

It took a while to get through this because a couple of the stories at the beginning were so hard-hitting. After finishing one, I literally felt as though I had been punched in the stomach. But that reflects the experience of black women in this country, so what did I expect. They're good and well-written. Highly recommended
