Michele Shriver is now on tour with CLP Blog Tours and Aggravated Circumstances

This book was fascinating, and quite hard to put down. An emotional and deep story, I found myself talking to my friends and family about the situation of the women involved, about the system, and about the processes that come along with a parent who struggles with addiction. I loved getting a POV from all involved, and think it worked really well to have Devin’s POV in first person. She would definitely be the hardes

I received a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a highly emotionally charged book that gripped me from the beginning and wouldn't let go. I found myself compelled to keep reading in order to find out what was next. The lives of three women so enter related but struggling very differently. Such amazing writing. I will definitely be watching for more of Michele's book.

Aggravated Circumstances is an intriguing story about the child welfare system and the affect it has on four women when an emotional circumstance within the system arises that intertwines their lives. Author Michele Shriver utilizes her legal experience to weave a fascinating and realistic tale told in the alternating first and third person narratives, that captivates the reader's attention as they follow this emotionally charged story about one drug addicted woman's attempt to get clean and rec ...more

Child welfare services are responsible to making sure that children live in a safe, healthy environment. When that isn't the case, they may remove a child from home and place the child in a safer location. In many cases, a family member is able to step in to care for the child. Others go into foster care. If the parent is able to show the ability to regain custody, the child is usually returned to the parent. If not, the child may be placed for adoption or will remain in the foster care system. ...more

I wasn't too sure about this book at first. How in the world would the author convince me to care whether or not a drug addict lost custody of her daughter? However, I loved this author's other work, so I gave it a try. Boy, am I ever glad I did! I love this book. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself rooting for Devin (the drug addict) before very long. She does start out a little rough. However, I think her struggles were captured in a realistic manner and I soon became invested in her lif ...more

Aggravated Circumstances is a book that really makes people think..Wow, Can that really happen??  Unfortunately they can.  This story about a drug addicted mother who has previously lost one child to the system, comes dangerously close to losing another.  After her daughter is taken from her, Devin is forced to decide whether or not she's worth fighting for.

A real to life story of the trials and tribulations of what Devin must do to try and win back her daughter, and at some points, it seems lik

I received this book free from the author through LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. This was a well-written book about the workings of the child welfare system, social workers, lawyers, and the courts when a child is removed from the home of a drug addicted mother. We see the long process of deciding whether to place the child back into the home or terminating rights and placing the child for adoption. This book brings forward the use of methadone in the rehab of a drug addict and h ...more
