“A war rages on around us every day. The struggle to save all mankind. The ultimate evil.”
As his moment of death looms Dracula suffers the ultimate betrayal. The champion of the Catholic faith in Eastern Europe realises it is Lucifer who is coming to claim him. However, Lucifer does not want his soul.
Instead he bites into Dracula’s neck and then offers his own blood to drink. Dracula suffers his mortal death, but he re-awakens. Immortalised with Lucifer’s blood coursing through his veins, the two are bound by blood for eternity. Lucifer has groomed him for this day and lays out the task before him.
Dracula is to destroy the institution of that which he has championed for so long. By bringing down the Catholic Church he can undo the Crucifixion and turn man against God once more. If he succeeds then Lucifer will ascend again to Heaven and signal the end for all mankind.

The Dracula Chronicles is a dark and terrifying new concept based on the real historical Vlad Dracula. It is an epic journey through the ages where the forces of Light and Darkness struggle for supremacy until the Second Great War, as foretold in the Book of Revelations.
This bitter feud begins after the creation of mankind. Lucifer’s jealousy leads to the First Great War of the angels. Hundreds of thousands of years on the feud simmers beneath the surface. It plots the course of history as we know it today. Both sides manipulate the major players through the centuries to seek an advantage over the other.
On a cold night in December 1431 in Sighisoara an old gypsy woman delivers a prophecy to the great Vlad Dracul. She tells him he is about to sire two sons, one an angel and the other a devil.
He returns to his fortress just as his wife bears him a son, whom he names Vlad. In the very same moment across the country on the border between Transylvania and Hungary a gypsy girl gives birth to another son, Andrei. The die is cast. The twin souls are born. The young Vlad Dracula becomes the instrument of the forces of Darkness. To balance this, the baby Andrei is blessed by the angels and bestowed with awesome powers.
These chronicles are their story.
BOUND BY BLOOD - VOLUME 1 is a dark and powerful page-turner that will question what you think and feel and how much you value your soul.
Shane KP O’Neill is the writer of two upcoming series, Path To Decay and Flesh And Blood.
The Path To Decay series follows the lives of Vlad Dracul and his family and his fight to win the throne of his father in Wallachia, while becoming a pawn in the bitter struggle between the Holy Roman and Ottoman Empires for supremacy in the 15th Century Balkans. Written in a more literary style than contemporary, these novels of historical fiction and dark fantasy contain strong elements of love, betrayal, tragedy, war, religious conflict, and political intrigue to bring the period alive in its entirety.
In Flesh And Blood, O'Neill brings alive the Antediluvian world in a series of sprawling epics. A world inhabited by angels, demons, giants, dragons, and other creatures, it is the story of the divide in Heaven and the Great War of the Angels. This struggle manifests through the bloodlines of Cain, the son of Sammael, and Seth, the son of Adam. It follows the true story of the Hebrew line of Adam and their struggle to survive and make their way against the evil designs of Sammael and his Fallen minions. It tells the story of how the line of Cain dominated and ruled over humankind, culminating with the daughters of Cain cohabiting with the Watcher angels led by Azazel, the true Beast of Revelation, and the aftermath that ensued with their creation of the hybrid race of giants and the great Sumerian traditions. Novels of love, tragedy, betrayal, survival, death, blood drinking, Luciferian ritual, and encompassing the world's most ancient evil, they are an exposé of the many truths the religions of the modern age have striven so hard to keep hidden. This series draws on Scripture, the writings in the ancient Hebrew texts and the Sumerian Cuneiform tablets, the stories of Atlantis and Greek Mythology, as well as from recent archaeological discovery to piece together the real story of the ancient world and our true origins.
Away from writing, the author indulges his lifelong passion for history and theology as is reflected in his extensive library. His love of books is matched only by his love of the countryside and of course, his family. As an added note, he has lived and travelled all over the world, a pursuit that has allowed him to spend time in the locations his readers will become familiar with in his books.
Originally I thought this book would turn out to be something like "The Historian" with it's factual or close to thereof accounts of times past, but it was SO MUCH BETTER. Whereas The Historian took me months to plod along through, I easily finished this book in a matter of days for lack of ability to put it down.
The author provides a NEW spin on the Dracula tale that even a hard core enthusiast like myself could accept because of how well written it was and how well the story progressed. There are so many elements and characters in the plot line which, along with the new perspective, make this a truly deep and delightful read.
I'd highly recommend this for any Dracula enthusiast.
“There is a reason why all things are as they are.” - Bram Stoker, Dracula
Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia, of the House of Drăculești, becomes a pawn in the age-old battle between good and evil. in his attempt to return to Heaven and dethrone God, the fallen angel Lucifer sets his plans into motion. he grants Vlad immortal life as a vampire and commands the Voivode of Wallachia to wage war against the Catholic Church no matter what the cost. author Shane KP O'Neill blends facts, folklore and myth and goes beyond them in creating a darker and more plausible account of the Dracula legend. spanning centuries, this outstanding debut is rich in detail. it offers a behind-the-scenes look at how Vlad Dracula schemes his way and manipulates well-known historical figures in his attempt to bring down the Catholic religion. Niccolo Machiavelli, the Borgias, Martin Luther, Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn are some of history's famous men and woman whom Dracula befriends and wittingly destroys. this novel is not for the faint of heart so be forewarned. although the language is very graphic and there are some sexual situations that may shock some readers, they are necessary to the plot. this is a tale of darkness after all yet there is also hope and goodness among its pages as well. overall, this an engrossing and entertaining book that will delight readers who love historical fiction, vampires or a combination of both. i was impressed by its scope and i highly recommend it. moreover, i look forward to reading the next chronicles.
Note: this review covers Volumes 1 and 2 of Bound By Blood (The Dracula Chronicles)

Shane O’Neill’s ‘The Dracula Chronicles’ is an ambitious project. O’Neill combines elements of the traditional Dracula story with chunks of Goethe’s ‘Faust’ and positions his tale against an epic historical backdrop.
This Dracula is literally a child of Hell, acting both as the central protagonist but also as a pawn of the fallen Lucifer. Waging war against the forces of Heaven, the Devil is playing a long game against his immortal Adversary as he employs the damned Voivode to bring about the downfall of the Catholic Church.
The author cleverly intertwines the fictional vampire and his psychopathic family with actual persons and events from European history, ranging from Machiavelli and the Medicis to Martin Luther. In doing so he subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) re-writes several of the critical episodes of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This is a difficult balancing act, but it is handled with skill and imagination and, might I say, not a little panache.
O’Neill acknowledges one or two ‘leaps of faith’/distortions in his methodology, but he peppers the novel with enough real historical research to give the reader a proper history lesson, as well as a slanted one. He is, for instance, one of the few re-tellers of the Dracula story to recount (correctly) that the real-life ‘Impaler’ ruled over Wallachia, not Transylvania.
The writing is visceral as befits the brutality of the age. Some of the violence and rapine may make the more sensitive reader wince, but the context is undoubtedly correct. As one might expect there is lots of sex, gore and medieval cruelty. This is NOT a vampire story sanitised for the ‘Twilight’ generation, but a tale of hatred and revenge, and of the struggle between the powers of Light and Darkness.
Volume 1 of the ‘Chronicles’ begins with a brilliant description of the aftermath of the Battle of Snagov in 1476 and ends with the stirrings of the Reformation. I am eager to see where Shane O’Neill’s restless mind takes us with Volume 2, and which specific historical happenings will provide further fodder for this bold re-imagining of the Dracula legend.
The author of “Dracula Chronicles” novel series, Shane KP O’Neill, got sucked into a mythical world just as he began and kept on studying the historical figure of Vlad Dracula after watching Christopher Lee’s Dracula on silver screen for the first time. Deciding on materializing a series of nine novels according to his plan which combine his interest in both Medieval history and writing, O’Neill drags his readers with the first two volumes in the series into the unknown depth of the myth of Dracula woven by love, revenge and design which all starts with Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. This long-running adventure in which historical events and prominent characters are displayed towards the author’s own fiction may draw the attention of “adult” readers who take interest in history, vampires and Dracula in particular. “Dracula Chronicles” stands apart from the thousands of others such as the prequel novels inspired by original gothic classic “Dracula” and other novels that are included in “vampire erotica” or “vampire soap opera” drifts. Just because here we are talking about a series of novels which create difference with its own treat of Dracula tale, the 15th century history, religious and mythological episodes, yet embellished with reformist and unconventional ideas. You readers must be prepared for an overdose of violent and sexual imagery and blood baths that you used to watch only on the silver screen too. While opting for a kind of narration which keeps visuality and lengthy dialogues in the foreground, it would not be wrong to claim that O’Neill greatly facilitates the job for those who like to fantasize while reading. The first book “Bound by Blood” which is deepening with a complicated fiction is the first piece of a project that is substantially artsy and scary but self-assured at the same time.
“Bound by Blood”, has become the first book in the series to get published. The author explains the reason behind this by saying, “I have opted to begin the series with this book, Chronicle III. This is where my reader will see Dracula as a vampire for the first time. A dear friend suggested to me that my readers probably wouldn’t want to wait until a third book before they saw a vampire.” The story unfolds with an epic and dramatic epilogue. Here explained how the historical figure Vlad Dracula fights his last battle and puts an end to his life as a human being. And the most anticipated question of “How did he become a vampire in the first place?” is answered at first hand in this chapter. Dracula revived with the blood of Lucifer that is the ultimate enemy of Catholic Church, also becomes a servant of the Devil for eternity. Dracula’s big adventure after becoming a crucial part of the Devil’s great scheme of bringing the end of human race starts at the monastery of Snagov where he exhales his last breath as human and turns into a kind of blood-sucking demon. Dracula must fight against his brother Andrei who takes an oath of destroying him in the end while trying to take Catholicism down. Some parts of the book may create the effect of actually watching “a snuff film”. If you don’t like to face those kind of sights at all (for instance; if you haven’t been able to watch Tv series “Rome” or “Spartacus” without a blink) then this series may not be your cup of tea. But there’s little doubt that some readers who do miss the old days when vampires were truly intimidating and evil will kick their heels to read the rest of this story after the first book is finished. Because you will enjoy witnessing the first encounter of Lucifer and Dracula as a little child in the years of his enslavery by the Ottomans and then Lucifer’s safeguarding him in the next book. “Dracula Chronicles” continues with the first book “Birth of the Monster” which tells us the beginning of the legend.
I love to read, so I try to pick up a book whenever I can. Fiction and specifically horror, are my true loves. So when I picked up Bound by Blood Volume 1, I was hoping for a good read. I didn't get that. I got a great read. Writing about Dracula's origins in all it's bloody glory is no small feat, and author Shane O'Neill embraces this with wonderful imagery and brutal honesty. Through all the great historical descriptions, the book moves at a good pace and the author gets you interested in the characters, especially Vlad himself. Dracula has not seemed this fresh in years, and I highly recommend you, the reader to embrace your inner vampire and read this book. I can't wait to read Volume 2. Well done.
Bound by Blood Volume 1 started out with the best action scene that I have read in a long time. Vlad Dracula was a fierce warrior and kicked some major butt. Swords, knives and arrows and a lot of blood…a whole lot of blood. I couldn’t tear my eyes away, the fight scene was so good. Vlad finally gets himself in a pickle and you ask yourself, “How in the world is he gonna get out of this?” Well you will be surprised because “HE” shows up. Now I’m already a scaredy cat when it comes to books like this, but unexpectedly, Shane pulled a laugh out of me with some of the dialog. Now who would ask Lucifer a question like that? As I went along reading the story of Vlad, I kind of felt bad for him…especially when there was a chance for him to have a companion. I’m always a sucker for romance.
The story was ruff, gory, but entertaining as hell. One thing for sure, Vlad was a bad ass. There was a scene where he was about to die from drinking consecrated blood and he needed a special blood to cure him. As people were rushing him to stop him, he just walked on and did his thing. I’m so in love! Then again, he was an evil son of a gun and so was his kid. Should I love ‘em or hate ‘em? Shane O’Neil makes you question yourself.
I’ve read many books and watched a lot of action films and the way Shane writes his scenes, I can surely see the fighting in motion, each slash, each stab, with guts galore. Not only does this book have gooey goriness, it also has an actual story surrounding a family that is bent on revenge upon their enemies, upon themselves and anybody else that slighted them. I don’t know if I want to see them all burn in Hell or what. These are clearly bad people but the way they are written, I sometimes don’t think they’re all that bad, at least in this fictitious book. If they were real…yea, burn baby burn.
Okay, as you can see, I’m loving this read and blabbering on, but I will leave you with this, you want to read a new take on Dracula’s beginnings and see how he became the supernatural urban legend that he was without all the fancy fru-fruness (yea, I made that up) of certain --- (I won’t say) vampire stories. You will want to read Bound by Blood Volume 1. I am getting the next Bound by Blood Volume 2 because I’m so scared, I can’t stay away.
The origins of Dracula’s life as the Lord of the Undead and the beginnings of his rise to power are explored in this exciting new novel by Shane K.P. O’Neill.
It’s the 15th century and the war between Heaven and Hell is constant. Lucifer is strengthening his forces, and his newest recruit is none other than Prince Vlad Tepes Dracula. Tasked with spreading horror in the Evil One’s name, Dracula sets out to claim as many Earthly souls as he can for his unholy master. Little does Dracula know, however, that God and Heaven have a new recruit of their own, an enemy who is closer to Dracula than even he realizes…
Shane K.P. O’Neill’s story is as rich in historical context as it is in vampire lore. Setting Dracula up as a pivotal figure in the Protestant Reformation, even going so far as to have him encounter Martin Luther, is a stroke of genius. The relationship between vampirism and the church is explored, as is the connection between vampirism and sexuality… and thankfully in a very un-TWILIGHT way. To Dracula and his brethren, sex, like their need for blood, is merely a baser instinct that must be satisfied.
The dichotomy of good vs. evil also permeates the novel. There is always a balance of power, and the fact that the world is always teetering on the edge gives the events a strong sense of urgency.
A thrilling and intense read, THE DRACULA CHRONICLES: BOUND BY BLOOD: VOLUME ONE is both a horror thriller and a tale of religious power plays. Looking forward to the next installment.
The Dracula Chronicles - Bound By Blood is the first volume of what I hope are several installments in this great new series. Shane O'Neill has created an epic tale set in the 15th century about the struggles between good and evil and through the use of historical references, as well as his very vivid imagination, he has created a world worth a close look. O'Neill seamlessly blends folklore and mythology with actual history to create a dark and disturbing picture of Dracula and the time period in which it is set. This is not a romanticized version of this well-known tale and, in fact, through its use of actual historical figures it manages to bring a healthy dose of "reality" to bear. I found O'Neill's choice to take this approach very interesting and it serves the story and his viewpoint very well.
Bound by Blood has graphic moments; but how could a book about Dracula not? But amidst the treachery and mayhem, there are moments of hope and humanity. This is a very good book and I have no doubt that fans of this genre will enjoy it immensely. This series is a great addition to my reading list and I'm looking forward to seeing where Mr. O'Neill takes it in subsequent books.
I am absolutely blown away. Bound by Blood came blowing in like a breath of fetid air! This story is a powerful and sweeping epic. The language, the settings, the characters...they all exude Classic. This story took me back to where my love of vampire novels originated, to the character who started it all and what a an interesting and captivating twist on the story. I am in love with the idea of a great battle raging between Heaven and hell. This base gives the story so much more meaning and raises the stakes (so to speak) and intensity of the writing. I love that O'Neill did nothing to soften up the brutality of Dracula, that he represented him as just what he is....a creature of Lucifer's making and yet we still want to follow his story. Brilliant!
Shane K.P. O'Neill has done a masterful job in writing this book. He provides a new and unique look into the story of Dracula and provides some thought provoking ideas on what it is like in hell. This book will stimulate your imagination as it entertains you. Bound By Blood is among the best vampire novels I have read.
It's so great to have new vampire books to read. I don't think I've seen any better than these stories. Now I have to wait for the next one. Not too long I hope.
So, while I take a quick break from writing, I'd like to drop a review on Bound By Blood, Shane O'Neill's adaptation of Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure that Dracula is based off of. Vlad is a servant of the Catholic Church, fighting the Crusades against the Ottoman Turks and the spread of Islam. He's the ruler of the Wallachian throne and the strongest warrior in his army. After a victorious battle, he and his forces are set upon by Turkish assassins, who manage to fatally wound him with arrow attacks. Knowing the end is near, Vlad requests to be taken to a chapel so he may die in peace on sacred ground. Surprisingly, it doesn't keep the last individual that Dracula expected to come for him out: Lucifer, who reveals to Dracula that the Crusades were his work and not that of God, who had abandoned his most faithful servant to eternal damnation since birth. The Prince of Darkness informs Dracula that he had always watched over him since the beginning.
To get to the point, Lucifer offers Dracula a deal: the Impaler's services in exchange for eternal life. Dracula takes the deal, but as with all things when dealing with Lucifer, there's always a drawback; he must continuously sustain himself through the consumption of human blood or die. Through Lucifer's bite and consuming Lucifer's blood, he becomes a vampire bound to the dark prince. Lucifer's endgame: use Martin Luther, who will be the one to cause a split in the Catholic Church, to bring Christianity to its knees. The act will give the original vampire 500 years to gather the power needed to strike back at the Church. It is through the tasks that Lucifer has given Dracula that he hopes to win his game with the Almighty and rule heaven and earth.
I'd rather not ruin the book for people, but trust me, there were no sparkling faux-vampires in the making of it. It's a good read if you're interested in the history of religion, a theologist, or you just like fantasy. I don't have anything bad to say about the book, though I could've done without the religion, even though it's been a big thing in vampire culture- crosses, holy water, rosaries, etc. Then again, it seems that it's more historical than anything, given the dates and places (I love historical accuracies.) Overall, great book and a read I totally recommend for history lovers and fantasy fans!
"The Dracula Chronicles: Bound By Blood - Volume 1" by Shane O'Neill is an excellent Dracula story. Combining the myth with history and significant events in the development of the Catholic Church the book has a lot to offer.
The story begins with one battle in a long winded struggle by Vlad III Dracula, Voivode of Wallachia to re-gain his throne and power. Close to victory he gets wounded and strikes a deal with Lucifer. Dracula is to gain eternal life in exchange for playing a significant role against the Catholic Church. The books then follows Vlad III Dracula doing just that: In the Italy of the Medici's and Machiavelli, the Court in London and in a Germany just before Luther's reforms. These historical elements in the book are really well done and make this an enjoyable and intelligent read that easily surpasses most Vampire and Dracula stories. There is a competence and power in this writing that makes the story feel very real, despite the paranormal aspects.
The characters are well developed and the dialogue runs very smoothly. The paranormal aspects of the story are what I expected to like the least but they too are written with care and attention to detail. I often feel that as Vampires are the flavour of the season many writers make details about their Vampires and the life they lead up as they go along, leaving the reader with a lot of confusion and inconsistencies. O'Neill has avoided such downfalls and never lost my attention or trust. The book is powerful, competent and very engaging. Highly recommended for all fans of the genre but particularly for those who also appreciate literary quality.
Here the story moves on after Dracula's mortal death and transition into a vampire at the hands of Lucifer. Now as an immortal he must find his way in the world, discover the wonder of what he has become and what his part is in Lucifer's Great Plan. But with this new life comes great loneliness and he is driven by his need to find a companion. In the years that follow he adds to his number and the bloodbath begins as Dracula and his kin begin their journey through the ages, sating their appetites both for blood and sex. Old scores are settled and old alliances reborn.
But the forces of Light are in play. The balance to the evil of Dracula, his twin brother and twin soul, Andrei, is nearing the end of his journey. He is to be laid to rest inside the inner sanctum of the Vatican where even Lucifer cannot reach him. This lays down the gauntlet to to the forces of Darkness and the battle against the Catholic Church begins in earnest, for it is from the bodies of Andrei and his sons that the weapons to kill Dracula will be crafted.
Be advised this is a very adult novel. It is very graphic and brutal in parts. This is deliberate on my part as I look to return to the much darker and more traditional vampire. Despite that, this novel and series bears no resemblance to Bram Stoker's original in any way. This is an entirely new concept.
Bound by Blood by Shane K.P. O´Neill is a very well written story with a natural flow that’s evident that the author has found his “voice” – something many authors envy. I have no doubt that O´Neill’s enthusiasm in the vampire genre reflects throughout the entire story.
The vampire genre with blood-suckers is a subject that has been written over and over again, and still there are a few authors such as Stephanie Mayor, Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro that manages to come up with a new interesting “niche” in this gender. Well now there is another author that can join in that group and that is Shane K.P. O´Neill. Just like the Twilight Saga and The Strain (Trilogy), O´Neill has managed to do the unthinkable. He has found a new angle and twist.
WARNING SPOILER - What really made me fall for this story is that O’Neill introduced a new concept in the vampire genre with a focus on Dracula; He has two sons…are they good or evil? Well that you have to find out yourself.
The character development and the setting are very well written.
From the beginning to the end the entire story will keep you on your toes!
I’ve read countless contemporary renditions of various classics – Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, Dracula, etc. Most are desperate reproduction attempts, as in, this sounds like Doyle….or, Stoker would write it like this, right? I have read a few that are genuine originals. Each based on a preconceived idea that utilizes the same primary characters, yet is disparate in form and technique – true pencraft. This particular opus by Mr. O’Neill falls into the latter category. The Dracula Chronicles Bound by Blood – Volume 1, is a well told story well written and I might add, impressively conceived and researched. I look forward to reading vol.2
What a great take on the classic Dracula story. Shane does a super job with the telling of this thriller from the creation of Dracula the monster to his influence in history's greatest events. fast paced and action packed, the monster, Dracula weaves a web of lies and deceit through out time. Can't wait to start book 2.
Mr. O'neill is clearly an author to watch, great story with a uniquely new vision of Dracula. A pleasure to read, I am greatly looking forward to the next book.
The Dracula Chronicles: Bound By Blood - Volume 1 by Shane O'Neill is a magnificent achievement. Shane has expertly combined the classic vampire myth with medieval history in such a way as to entertain with gallons, no lakes of blood. Immediately, from page 1, the reader is dragged through a battle scene that I can only describe as brutal in the extreme, but tempered by fleshed out character descriptions. During this battle with the Turks, Vlad III Dracula, Voivode of Wallachia is mortally wounded by devious assassins. Close to death, he seeks the comfort of a chapel where Lucifer comes to him and offers the deal of the lifetime. Dracula takes the offer and from there on suffers the loneliness of a vampire demon, only to come to life when feeding from the living. But there is a price to pay - Dracula must do one thing for Lucifer, just one small thing - destroy the Catholic Church and pave the way for his return as the dominant force on earth and in heaven. Dracula travels far and wide to Italy, London and Germany where he alters history to Lucifer's benefit. Shane deftly uses real life famous historical people to involve Dracula's devious plan and it works wondrously. So if you fancy an intelligent read of historical fantasy then I highly recommend this FIVE STAR novel to all Dracula fans.
Bound By Blood is by far the most historically rich and detail oriented vampire novel I have ever read. I appreciate the lengths the author went to in his research, and commend him for a truly unique and extraordinary vampire read. The story he creates of Dracula’s beginning and his rise to infamy is intoxicating and steeped in true historical events that will have history and vampire buffs alike begging for more. And as an added plus, the author weaves in incredibly touching bits of erotic romance, thrilling tales of political and religious corruption, and a cast of characters that retain individual voices and a believable complexity. This is the mark of a truly gifted storyteller.
I must admit that this book is very violent at times, but readers who enjoy true, uncensored vampire lore will love the horror themes. If you are squeamish or sensitive to violence and gore, then this book may be too much for you.
O’Neill’s debut vampire novel is one that should be marked as a TRUE vampire novel. It’s not pretty, it’s not fluffy, and it most definitely isn’t Twilight. This is a REAL vampire doing some pretty awful things, as evil vampires should. As long as you’re okay with the violence, then you will easily add this vampire book to your stack of favorite horror novels.
wonderful to have the old style old school vampire King Dracula back in all his evil hissing bloody fanged glory. This book seamlessly weaves in rich historical details into his tale. From the wars of Transylvania and the conflict between brothers, to the pomp and politics of the Papal court, the Borgia's, Machiavelli, even Martin Luther make an appearance. The relationship between Dracula and Lucifer a contentious developing father son dynamic played out over the stage of history. Dracula's relationships with his own sons and the growing extended, blended, family, with all it's glorious bloody dysfunction delivers plenty of grand game play and emotional drama to keep you involved with every character.
The action is fast paced and raw with plenty of lusty rumpy pumpy to keep the pages turning far past your bed a bye time.
This book sets up the characters for the second book like a chess game and I am looking forward to seeing how it all turns out. A terrific read for those long nights when the kids are late coming home from the prom.
If Goth horror is your thing you will love this.It is the tale of Dracula from birth as human through his life as a warrior fighting for his country and throne to when he agreed to do the devils bidding and on.It is so well written you'd think it was all based on fact. The research alone that has gone into it must have been huge and thanks to Shane's attention to detail has made the book what it is, something that I'd enjoyed as much as Bram Stoker's original.Fantastic!
This book was all I hoped it would be. It introduces us to the darkest and most chilling of premises, the ultimate battle of good versus evil, and this is a real treatise of evil. The way the author blends fiction with real historic events is breathtakingly good, and the use of real historic figures such as Machiavelli and Martin Luther a true stroke of genius. It's so good it makes you wonder if this is truly fiction, or fact.
Bound by Blood was a fabulous new take on famous name, encompassing Vlad Dracula's earlier years, his birth as a vampire and consquential "life". Extremely graphic scenes throughout brought the action and horror to life with amazing clarity. A juicy mix of history, folklore, fact, fiction and horror, Shane O'Neill has teased us with the first book in this series based on Vlad Dracula. I could not put it down!!
Bound by Blood Volume One introduces us to the famous vampire Dracula before he makes his hellish deal with Lucifer. Known down through history as a bloodthirsty monster, he actually began his reign as the equally bloodthirsty ruler, Vlad the Impaler. In Dracula’s time however, rulers had to be heavy handed and ruthless. If they didn’t take a firm hold over their people, and stand strong against their enemies, they didn’t tend to last long. Wars were common, land borders frequently invaded. Dracula not only sent his men out to defend his territory, he led them in battle, usually right out front where it was most dangerous.
This volume begins toward the end of one of these battles. Dracula is exhausted, his men as well. They believe victory over their enemy has been won and they want nothing more than a place to get down from their equally tired horses and rest. But they are taken by surprise when their foe sends in a small band of archers who manage to get around them unnoticed. They patiently waited until they had Dracula and his men trapped in a bottleneck area of the mountains, almost impossible to get everyone turned back before they are hit with an arrow. Most of his men are killed and Dracula himself mortally wounded. It is right after this that Lucifer shows up to offer him a deal. He will make the defeated ruler an immortal with power no man had ever had before. In return Lucifer expects Dracula to help him bring down the powerful Catholic Church. Angered by the loss he suffered at his enemies hands, Vlad accepts the deal. And so is born the most famous vampire of them all.
In this volume we are given time to learn more about Dracula, his life, his thoughts, his needs as a new vampire. Lucifer has given him this time to figure out what he can, or cannot, do. What I found exceptional about the writing by Shane K.P. O’Neill was his ability to bring the vampire across as a real person, horrified at times by his own deeds. Yes, he is molded by evil and performs evil actions, but he was also human at one time, with human emotions and needs, loneliness, and perhaps a touch of fear, forcing him to learn things about himself he’d never faced before. As I found with the teaser, Birth of a Monster, the description given in this novel, though not overdone, gives a clear vision in the reader’s mind of the man, the land, and the difficulties the people of this time dealt with. There were times I felt as if I was right there beside them, watching—and not sure I wanted to be. A well set up beginning for what I expect to find an exciting series.
Though I loved the story and description in this novel, more editing would have been appreciated with grammar and punctuation, dropping the score from five stars to four. There are also more typos than I would expect to deal with. My slight irritation over these details was not enough to cause me to stop reading however, which tells you a lot about the great story and characters. There are a few sexually explicit scenes where torture and death are a bit difficult to read. I know I tended to skim over these parts to get back on track with the story, but not everyone will have as weak a stomach as I do. Great beginning. I plan to place a review for Volume Two shortly.
Proper gory, bloodthirsty and violent vampires. Awesome. History, battles, corruption in the church, plotting, backstabbing, brutal, bloody and some hot vampire sexy time. What more could you possibly ask for.
With the caveat that author Shane KP O'Neill is a friend on facebook, this 2012 offering explores an alternate history as experienced by Vlad Tepes in, what is the first of two volumes within a wider chronicle series. Now I trust that you know that Bram Stoker did not base the title character of Dracula on Vlad Tepes, Dracula was a borrowed name and a footnote, nothing more, and this has been convincingly and repeatedly proved by Dracula scholar Elizabeth Miller. However it is also true that Tepes and Dracula the vampire are now forever interweaved in modern folklore.
Thus, whilst I bristle at versions of the novel that try to make that connection I am sanguine when a novel (or film) uses Tepes as its basis in its own right. What Shane O’Neill has done is take a historical figure, imbibe him with modern (and religiously based) lore rather than sticking canonically to Stoker’s lore and created a tale of a brutal and violent vampire.
This vampire has been created by Lucifer as part of his war against heaven – we also meet more briefly his twin-souled brother who is heaven’s agent. The turning process was like that of much vampire lore but it was the devil feeding Tepes his own blood. The primary vampire is pretty darn untouchable by mortal hands and thus there is a convoluted method of killing him that involves his soul brother and the brother’s seven sons. I say primary as he is able to make other vampires.
The novel walks through history, bending it into a vampiric shape, culminating in Dracula manipulating Martin Luther, causing the schism in Christianity part of his duty as he prowls through time towards the second great war. The novel also has a brutality to it. These vampires kill and maim, they rape and sadistically sexually torture victims. There is also the ability to be redeemed - not that many wish this.
The violence could be a bit much for some – I welcome it, vampires should have a dark side and these certainly do. I said that Stoker’s lore is not necessarily stuck to. Holy items need a faith behind them (though neither the devil nor Dracula can enter the Vatican), sunlight burns vampires – there is a get out to this. If Dracula feeds upon a foetus it confers the ability to withstand daylight (though not direct sunlight) and to become invisible at will.
It was nice to delve into history, when many authors are in a modern urban fantasy mode, it was great to have brutality, when many vampires seem to be potential boyfriends. I can live with it featuring Tepes as this is not Stoker canon. Gory fun.
This review first appeared on my blog, Taliesin Meets the Vampires, and has been reproduced here by request of the author.
I downloaded this book as a promotional gift from the author.
In depth insight to the life of Dracula, from his origin throughout. Well researched you learned more about the time periods as seen by Vlad Dracula and his two companions. Well written the plot unfolds, at times in gruesome horror but yet kept your attention. The cruelty and bloodshed a clear footprint of their path across Europe. Darkness and light at odds with one another in this spellbound book. The scenes well described, colorful that created just enough tension and questions to keep your attention. The supporting characters making the story almost believable as your imagination is stirred. A Good book I can recommend to all readers for the love of Dracula, a good thriller with a good plot.
A skillful blend of medieval historical facts, myths, and paranormal fantasy!
A dark and epic vampire tale set in the 15th and 16th century Europe. A real page turner, full of strong emotions and violence, this novel is about the ultimate battle of the forces of Light against the forces of Darkness to save mankind.
Even though, this is not my favorite genre, I have to admit it was a powerful novel that kept me fascinated until the very end.
Forgive me Shane I am a horrible reviewer but I will give it my best effort.
I am not sure but I'm thinking this is a debut novel from this author. If that is indeed the case then WOW! It truly is a remarkable piece of work. I don't know what to add differently from what the description of the book and what is on the back cover tells us. That would be my review of this book minus my personal feelings which is what I will describe here.
For me, this was not a fast read. It is very epic in scale and has a ton of layers. Some of the scenes were kind of hard for me to read as they were extremely brutal and a tad gross. These are not your sexy vamps of today's reading genre but truly the monsters of old. Also, I had to really pay attention because the war scenes are quite long and detailed and keeping up with who's who when it came to who's a General, Cardinal, Pope at the time, friend/foe, relative from multiple sides (countries)....etc, all with foreign names was tricky. It is quite the horror story that has waged war between good and evil that continues throughout many generations.
It is very well written and for an indie author (I think), I didn't find not one typo! He must have some very good proof readers as I usually find quite a few in even majorly recognized authors with many many books. I really enjoyed the story and for those that like these kinds of epic tales will love these Chronicles. I very much did but definitely needed to read something funny and light afterwards. There is a prologue at the end of Vol 2 that will definitely having me reading the next one as well. It was like I could see this being filmed as a very dark twisted mini series as I was reading it.
