Rate this book

Jimmy Liao's books have a way of finding me when I need them. This author holds a special place in my heart.
If you have a kid, you will probably feel moved by this book. It deals with lots of everyday human emotions, especially generated by the gap between generations.
The cute illustrations can be enjoyed by children and parents together, and both can be inspired by the stories of many perfectly imperfect famous people. But some topics go deep and can definitely give adults food for thought.

On a side note: It is a great book to learn or review many useful colloquial and idiomatic expressions for Chinese learners.

I didn't care much for this one. It was too long, too repetitive, and not even much variety in the illustrations.

I am reading this book slowly, to feel illustrations and texts together. Do we expect a book on not being perfect to be perfect when dealing with this topic? Of course not so let's enjoy a book that wants to be non perfect with all the magic of its kind. However, this is not my favorite book by this autor.

I really liked the messages that the author/illustrator tried to convey to us readers about the word "Perfect" (完美). According to the author, this book is dedicated to those parents and children who can abandon their pursuit of perfection. And this is what this is all about: "Perfect is not everything", "Even though you are not perfect, it doesn't mean that you are useless or unworthy" etc. I think these quotes that the author brought up in his book are a great example of how the world should view their life, and stop chasing for perfection, since it doesn't exist:

"Have no fear of perfection - You'll never reach it." - Salvador Dali

"Striving to better, oft we mar what's well." - Shakespeare

"We live in a rainbow of chaos." - Paul Cezanne

"If there was nothing wrong in the world there wouldn't be anything for us to do." - George Bernard Shaw

Perfection has one grace defect. It is apt to be dull. - William Somerset Maugham

The text combined with the colourful art that features our main heroin, 郝完美, we follows her "journey" through ups and downs in life, and re-discover the meaning of the word perfection.
This is the first book I've read from this author, but I've heard of his name before and admired his art, so when I saw this in my local library I was very excited to find it there. Overall, I loved it and despite that I didn't agree with some things he said in the book, it was a great read.

As all Jimmy Liao's books, the illustrations often tell the story by themselves. It was such a fun read, and i think a lot of people, not only children, can relate to it. Once again the emotions are really tangible when reading this amazing story. I would definitely recommend it to everyone.
