This is Book One in the uniquely written Mortal Realm Witch series for ages 8-12 and anyone who loves to read about animals and magic, Mortal Realm Witch: Learning About Magic. It contains six separate, but connecting, stories, each featuring a different aspect of Learning About Magic. In Learning About Magic you will meet DWW who is just learning she is a witch and that her dog, Trillman, can talk and he is going to teach her how to use magic but it won't be easy as DWW struggles to learn responsibility and Trillman struggles to teach it to her.
Throughout Book One, not only will you learn about DWW, who will tell you her origin story about becoming a witch and learning about her new powers and responsibilities, and more, but you will get to read stories about DWW from the point of view of her familiar, Trillman, and the Head of the Witches Council who also plays a role in helping teach DWW, Trom.
In this book DWW will also become a magic teacher to two magical wolf pups where she will come to learn much about herself, as well as try to stop a warlock from taking over the Realms as her newfound responsibility gets tested. You will also meet Air Raid, a dragon, and his new friend and witch, Ally. Ally wants Air Raid to be her familiar, but Trom says dragons don't make good familiars. Together Ally and Air Raid will try to prove him wrong.

An enchanting escape into a world of wonder, danger, and destiny. The writing is vivid, the lore is deep, and the magic leaps off the page. I didn't want it to end!" – Anna W

Mortal Realm Witch is broken up into six different short stories. Each story takes the point of view of a different character in the book. While this is a nice spin off from a straight narration, there are some flaws with this. Each story runs a little short and ends up leaving the characters in the tale underdeveloped. Because these stories are very brief, the pacing tends to become inconsistent. By the time you think you are getting to know the character, suddenly the story ends.
The environment and characters show great potential, but I would have to read the next book in the series before I can confidently recommend this series. As it is right now, I could only recommend this book to people who are strong fans of the fantasy genre, particularly witches.
Reviewed by Bethany aged 8 I really enjoyed this book. I loved how the beginning informed me all about witches and it felt like an information book rather than a story book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books on witches and similar. I definitely want to read the rest of the series
It was good, but I would have liked to seen more details. Like in the last story, what was his plan? I would have liked to have seen a little more action and some more explanations.
Priester crafts a vibrant, inviting world filled with witches, magical creatures, and challenges that test courage and creativity. The protagonist’s journey of learning magic feels relatable mixing excitement, mistakes, and growth in a way that mirrors real-life learning. The pacing is brisk and the tone accessible, making it a great read for middle-grade and young adult audiences who love fantasy adventures.
Title: Book One, Mortal Realm Witch; Learning About Magic Author: Jennifer Priester Genre: Fantasy e-book Published 2012 First novel in Mortal Realm Witch series
Main Character(s): DWW, a witch, and Trillman, her dog familiar.
Story: The book begins with a "prologue" that explains about witches. We live in the Mortal Realm, but most witches live in the Other Realm. Some witches live in the Mortal Realm with us. After this opening explanation about witches and their magic, the first story about a witch called DWW begins. DWW lives mostly in the Mortal Realm. She gets a letter on her birthday which tells her that she is witch. She is also warned not to tell any mortal that she is a witch, because they might be a witch hunter.
My favorite story in the book was "Wolf Magic" where DWW is in charge of protecting magical wolf pups and teaching them magic. DWW can change into a wolf. She takes the pups hunting. I liked how she teaches them how to do things. Also this story felt most like a story to me.
Review: This leads to my review. One thing I didn't like with this book was that a lot of it is just the author telling us about DWW, but not really telling a story. I mean the author tells us how DWW takes the wolf pups hunting, But it is not like a story where you worry about what is going to happen next. In the beginning they mention witch hunters. It would be more exciting if there were witch hunters chasing DWW and the pups. But maybe this will come later in the series.
Rating: 3 stars Comments: I don't think I would read this book again. I would read another book in the Mortal Realm Witch series. And I would recommend this book to some middle-graders and kids who are younger than middle graders, both boys and girls.
I won this from a goodreads giveaway and I absolutely loved it. I was thrilled to have gotten this book as I thought it would be perfect for my children and the book did not disappoint. They loved it!
