I found this wonderful book in a used bookstore, not knowing what it was. The only year I found in it was 1930, but it amazingly unaged. The dedication to the reader explains it all, written in Wolfe's own handwriting. Just to use a simple line of it, "For all we sought + missed, or felt unclaimed behind, for all the dreams we had and lost, for youth..." It goes on, but it's absolutely beautiful, and the poems, which may be taken together or apart, all find a niche in my soul. ...more

I was first acquainted with Wolfe's poetry via Louis Untermeyer's anthology "Modern Poetry", issued originally in 1920. What struck me about this poet was his economy. The poems featured in that anthology were predominantly what I would call miniatures, a typical one being this charmer, called "The Lilac":

Who thought of the lilac?
"I," dew said,
" I made up the lilac
out of my head."

"She made up the lilac!
"Pooh!" thrilled a linnet,
and each dew-note had a
lilac in it.
