Read through this book for a second time - the first time when I was picking through it for AP American History (4, baby! Unbelievably). Finished it before I took the Foreign Service Exam a few weeks ago. I like the way that history was laid out, with arguments for and against major laws and issues. And sly little digs at things like the KKK ("weird sheets"), even back in the 60s when it was written. All in all, a fun way to get your head around all that American History you forgot you never knew.
Read this in high school to prepare for the AP American History Exam. It was very usual from that standpoint of view (test prep), but I wouldn't recommend it as pleasure reading. There are plenty of better books on American history out there.
