Focus . . . it's a discipline that is essential in both golf and life. In this beautifully illustrated gift book, these three major champions share their instructions and testimonies for success on the golf course and success in the Christian life.
In the story "Focus: The Name of the Game", Scott Simpson, Larry Mize, and Loren Roberts wrote several things about golf, life, and faith in God. Each author wrote a different section in the book. Scott Simpson wrote about the irons, Larry Mize wrote about the woods, and Loren Roberts wrote about the short game. The authors' purposes were to tell the reader their stories about golf, how to take certain shots, both golf and life strategies, and having faith in God playing golf and living your life. They explain how they praise God no matter what happens to them in golf and in their normal lives.
A theme of this story is yes, to focus while playing golf, but that is not the big theme. The real theme is to have faith in God no matter if things go good or bad. In the story, Scott Simpson was telling a story about the 1991 U.S. open. He was tied with another player for first place. On his second to last hole, he hit his ball in the water sending him to two back of his opponent. He was not upset because he realized that it was just a game, and the important thing was he still had God. The authors all said they do everything through God. A game is nothing compared to having faith in the lord. Always have faith in God even if things do not go the way you intended them to. You still have God.
The style of this book was narrative, informative, and descriptive. It is narrative because the authors tell stories about golf and their lives. At the end of each author's section, they told a story about what they have taught in the section, and how it tied in with either one of their golf tournaments or their lives. The story is informative because the book teaches different ways how to hit clubs, how to have faith in god, and how to have focus in any game, but especially golf. "Focus: The Name of the Game" is also descriptive. It is descriptive because it talks about the player's in golf first hand. They tell what they did wrong in a certain situation, or what they did right in a certain situation. Although there were three styles in the book, the styles really help you understand the theme and book a lot better.
I think this book was really a great and inspiring book. It actually taught me some new things to work on in my own golf game. I liked how the book was broken up into sections, and each section had many subsections. I loved reading the stories about the golfer's lives and tournaments at the end of each section. At first I asked myself if I thought I had enough focus in golf, and if I praised God no matter if things went good or bad. This book taught me how to do both. There was nothing in this book that I really disliked. I enjoyed reading this book and did not want to put it down. I would give it five stars and recommend it to any golfers, or anyone who enjoys sports, and is a Christian. "Focus: The Name of the Game" changed my perspective in golf, and the most important thing, life.
In the book "Focus: The Name of the Game", Scott Simpson, Larry Mize, and Loren Roberts purpose for writing this book is to informs people about the different aspects of golf. This book can help beginners learn the game or experienced payers learn something new to help their game. They all explain the how each club is used, what different parts of the golf course and how to keep a peaceful state of mind by finding God.
The theme of this book is to help people learn the game of golf. Golf is a very hard to master, and it is more than hitting a ball around. They tell you how you can become better through club selection and playing the course conservatively. They use their experiences a lot throughout the book. Loren Roberts talks about how he won his first PGA tournament at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. He talks about how his short game won him the tournament. He gives advice during this on how to become a good short game player.
The style this book was written in is exposition with a little narrative mixed in. the exposition part was a lot of the book. They writers used it to explain all aspects of golf. I the book, they explain how and when to use a wood and when to use an iron. They said if you are playing it safe, then go with the iron, but if you are aggressive, then use a wood and go for the green. They explain the short game a lot because it’s where 40-50% of you shots are from. Then they explained you need to stay calm. All the writers would turn to God for help and that’s why they were all PGA professionals. It was also a little bit of narrative because they talked about their success on the PGA Tour and the tournaments they won.
I liked this book because it explained a lot about golf that I had not known before. I hope I can use this book to help out my golf game. I want to be on the PGA Tour one day, so a book written by professional golfers is a good thing because they know what they are talking about. If I could change one thing about this book, it would be to drills for the reader to do on the practice area. They could have included different chipping techniques or to hit three balls for different locations and see which one is closest. Then you would practice more on the farthest shot. I have not read any books similar to this because it explains the game of golf. Most books I read tell about someone’s life in a sport but never explains exactly how to play it. Over all, I would recommend this book to someone looking into play golf or someone who struggles a little bit with the game.
