I felt like there were some good stories in here, but they were largely buried under ineffectual storytelling. Goldstein divided her collection into two parts--Olim (Ascending) for her stories that took place in Israel and ve Yordim (Descending) for her stories that took place in the United States. Appropriate distinction for religious Jewish literature, and I liked how at the end of the day everyone was a bit lost. The author captures the culture and voice of Americans and Israelis. This is a collection of stories that are clearly "insider". The writing felt somewhat overdone in places. The tone of the stories was uniformly sad, disturbing, and unsettling.
