Galen Avery Rowell (August 23, 1940 – August 11, 2002) was a wilderness photographer, adventure photojournalist and mountaineer. Born in Oakland, California, he became a full-time photographer in 1972.

If you have a niche interest in outdoor photography in the 80's/90's this book is fascinating. Rowell's writing makes you want to get out and make images!

Much more text here than in most of Rowell's books--far more text than photos. The chapter titles give one an insight into the author's goals.

A good book for my reference shelf. Lots of great photos and essays on how he shot the photos but without being boring.
