More academic than informative, this book is seemingly more concerned with cultural criticism than the history of Grove Press. There is good material here, but the organization worked against my understanding of exactly how Grove fit into the two decades when it provided a kind of cultural beacon for a generation. As Glass observes, the baby boomers are likely the last generation to be defined in large part by the books they read, and certainly Grove published many of those books, as well as the ...more

No country for old men: Fascinating history of the man and publishing house who almost singlehandedly put an end to the obscenity trials in literature only to be overrun by postmodern attacks that he know doubt helped pave the way.
