Series review
Awkward Yoshida is hated by all the girls in school for his perceived closeness with hot guy Sato, who uses hanging out with Yoshida as an excuse to turn them all down. If Yoshida is merely an excuse, why does Sato taunt him in private about “his favorite”? Is it possible Sato’s feelings run deeper than friendship? And what could he possibly see in the funny-looking Yoshida? Watch Yoshida’s life turn upside down with hilarious results!

According to wiktionary, this is on-point for yaoi: from Japanese やおい (yaoi), an acronym of Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi (ヤマなし、オチなし、意味なし), "no climax, no point, no meaning".

I got sucked in and spent way too much time and money on this series of boys-love scenarios. Because that’s all it really is, a series of tropes strung together with a mean pretty boy and an “ugly” tough guy who is really short.

This series contains: badly proportioned hands and bodies (though I've seen much worse), mean girls, asshole love interest, non-consensual or dubiously-consensual sexual interactions, and a total disregard to boundaries or desires.

While it has its moments, there's already enough explosive boys-love stories out there. We didn't really need another. Me saying “it's not as bad as others" isn't saying much. I know it's good that things are getting better but they're still not good enough, and I can’t really believe I read nine volumes of this before I gave up.

Favorites and not so favorites

This book has 2 of my favorite episodes in it. The marathon race and Sato getting a fever are two of the best stories in the whole series, in my opinion. The humor in these stories is as fantastic as always. Unfortunately, this one also contains the banana peel/amnesia episode, which is just terrible. I think it's the worst of the whole series, so I dinged this book a star because of it.

There's also a story about not-green-tea madeleines which falls between the two, but isn't bad as a story by itself.

I'm tired of the fan club girls!! They're so annoying I want to get to the point they become less involved. Also the friend is irritating too. I don't like how much the story revolved around him this volume. I would rather just focus on developing Sato and Yoshida's relationship which we got the teensiest bit of, but it's not enough. >:(

I'm reading these so fast! This series is getting cuter as their relationship develops.

His Favorite Volume 5 feels very much like a filler in the series - there's not a lot of development of the main characters' and we're given a couple of vignettes featuring the side characters that ultimately weren't very memorable. Coming after the great info dump of the previous volume, going into Sato's background and giving us examples of just why he's so weird, it feels like a bit of a let down.

In this volume, Makimura develops a crush on the student council president - but the president has designs on Sato and is happy to use Makimura to those ends. This involves a marathon race by the girls of the school with Sato as the prize and the student council president determined to win. As with the drawing contest, the race will fall flat. In the next story, someone is dropping banana peels on the floor and as students trip on them, they lose their memory. Sato decides to take advantage of this with Yoshida - easy score! Another story has a girl asking Yoshida to get back cookies she gave to Sato (which were poorly made and potentially embarassing to her). Yoshida ends up at Sato's house to try to steal the cookies back - but Sato easily figures out the ploy and is happy to get Yoshida alone at his house. In the last story, Sato is doused in water in several comical escapades and manages to get sick in his own unique way. Fortunately, he has Yoshida there to nurse him.

So, as noted, this is probably the least interesting volume in the series - but worth it to keep the continuity on this really fun story. Yoshida remains the crazy little monkey he is and Sato is always worth a good laugh as he tries to figure his crush out.

Received as an ARC from the publisher.

This volume isn't that memorable, but is still enjoyable.
--------------
The girls have planned a race, with Sato as the prize. You have to love how Sato is always the prize in everything in this series. With all the time Sato spends at school, hung all over Yamada, you would think that everyone would realize (during the time it takes 5 volumes to take place!) that Sato is homosexual. But, no, the girls--and, even his male friends--still seem oblivious to this obvious fact.
-----------------
So, the girls compete to choose who will give Sato the cookies they made in Home Ec. But, one girl that wins doesn't want to eat her cookies, so she asks Yamada to intervene, and have Sato not eat them. He succeeds in this, but his mom ends up eating the gross cookies.
-------------
There's also a story where everyone--except Sato--gets a cold. Since the common cold is very contagious, I find this hard to believe. With him being at school among all those infected people, he would have caught it, too.
---------------------
This series is good, and I look forward to reading future volumes.

Summary for those who don't want to waste time with my rambling opinions: Great series, great volume, a filler with little character building but we all need a little filler to keep from being sad at it ending too soon.

It has been decided this particular volume is mostly just filler but it was still positively brilliant. I know the tautology/redundancy/pleonasm was unnecessary but it certainly conveys my feelings about the book. This particular volume was sweeter and less sweet. Contradictory, I know, but it can't be helped. Although I absolutely loved Sato's fever induced delirium time. THAT was delicious. That page is definitely left an impression. On me and the rest of the class... But I shouldn't spoil it. Cruel to be kind and all that rumba. And a certain someone wasn't as cruel as he usually is. Signs of change ahead? Guess we get to find out in about 144 days from today, if a website I was looking at is any indication of volume's 6 release date. For all of us bad at maths, myself included, that means it should be out early February of 2014. Whether this is right will be decided in the future ;)

P.S Sorry about my summary. Apparently I can't help but ramble in a disjointed manner. Who knew?

This volume was cheesy and silly, but it had a purpose and I love seeing Sato feeling so vulnerable.
I don't care how ridiculous it gets, or how long it takes, because this is the slice of silly, carefree reading and blend of good/bad romance I needed to get me out of my reading slump.
I have to keep reading, because I need to know what happens next. I'm hooked.
Does Sato change? I'm not sure I care.
Does Yoshida gain his courage? I hope so. I'm looking forward to him putting his foot down with Sato and seeing how that goes.
I can't wait for that threatened public kiss, that will finally show everyone they're dating. And I FLOVED the entire cold/fever situation. It was adorable, but also showed how conflicted Sato is.

Love the series so far. It's great that the relationship is having it's little moments between the two. They even get to go on a date with just the two of them! Some of it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, especially with the banana peels, but it's really great that we get to see the relationship between the two evolve a little bit and take shape.

The whole marathon thing was kind of tedious and didn't love the banana peel bit, but the green (not green tea!) madeleine cookies scene was fun. And Sato's fever... oh my!

this is starting to get a little boring...but I'm borrowing them from a friend and they only take 10 min to read, so no skin off my nose I guess, and it increases my book count for the year
