Originally published in 1982 to wide acclaim, The Good Son remains Craig Nova’s undisputed masterpiece. This classic explored the complicated entanglements of fathers and sons —expressed in the story of nouvue-riche father Pop Mackinnon, who used his wealth to manipulate his son Chip into the ‘right’ kind of marriage upon the young man’s return from World War II.

All the Dead Yale Men
By Craig Nova

Here it is, a book that I really liked, by an author I’d never heard of, who has written 14 other novels, only one of which I am familiar with - The Good Son. All the Dead Yale Men is a sequel, so I will be sure to go back and read the original, which is his most acclaimed work. (And how have I not known about this author all these years? I feel cheated.)

Craig Nova writes great complex sentences, very acrobatic writing that is brilliant to read. But, this plot just doesn't fly for me. The characters don't feel real to me and the conflict in the story just left me shrugging my shoulder. Maybe it's a guy thing. I think it is a guy thing; I'm just not moved by yet another tale about the so-called inevitability of the philandering university professor cum rock star. Or at least, if it must be written about, give me something new and thought-provokin ...more

Writing style was not my favorite, a bit too much time-line jumping that deterred from the flow of the book.

I liked this book but not as much as The Good Son<\i>, although I appreciate it as an extension of and sequel to that earlier work. More like 2.5 stars. Nova's writing style is complex and engaging (I could imagine others finding it too ornate or fussy), but the plot seemed to have some holes or gaps and the whole Robert-Pia timeline was confusing and took me out of the story. It just didn't seem believable in parts. ...more

While I just loved The Good Son by Nova, I did not like this book as much. I would give it a 3.5 rating but not a 4. The writing didn't move me like the first book did until about the last quarter of the book. Maybe I expected too much, reading this one right on the tail of the other one. I was a little disappointed.

Pretty interesting portrait of the time. Written in 1982, and recently re-published. Fine portrait of the "Yalies" i knwe growing up

Great book, but kind of vague in parts. Ending is unlikely.
