Though he is virtually unknown to the English-speaking world, May is possibly the most-read German author of all time: his books have sold an estimated 100m copies to date. The Germans have a saying: "We know Goethe, but we read Karl May".

Karl May developed a love of good stories while serving time in prison for fraud. He wrote over 70 books, many of which have been translated into over 30 languages. Among his best-known works is Winnetou, published in three volumes between 1876 and 1893. The s

This book was a reread for me, a reread thirty years in the making. There are times when I reread the books I had loved as a child, that I find them mediocre at best. To put it simply, not many books stand the test of time, and the mind had since moved on to more challenging things to entertain it. However, this is not the case with Winnetou and Karl May's writing.

I fondly recall the innocent years when I devoured his books lusting after the wide world and all it has to offer. Karl May took me

Nama Winnetou dan Karl May ibarat sekeping mata uang : tak terpisahkan. Membicarakan Winnetou sudah pasti akan menyeret pula nama Karl May bersamanya. Demikian sebaliknya.

Begitu tersohornya kisah petualangan Old Shatterhand bersama Winnetou, Sang Kepala Suku Apache (Indian), sehingga sudah dianggap legenda oleh para penggemarnya, bukan saja di Jerman, negeri asal Karl May, tetapi juga di seluruh belahan dunia.

Karl Friedrich May (1842-1912) memang terkenal dengan karya-karyanya berupa "kisah per

"Write what you know." With those words I have probably quoted or paraphrased the advice of a countless number of writers. The reason for this advice is simple: the lie that is fiction must be perceived as a truth if a book is to stand the test of time. But then we have Winnetou - The Apache Knight.

Karl Friedrich May was born in Germany in 1842 and lived to the age 70 without ever having stepped foot in the American West. Yet he chose to write about that unknown place in the absence of any firs

The copy I have is on loan from a friend, a Bavarian dedicated to this book. I see now why this and the other works of Karl May have become classics in Germany. Granted, some of the details of the American West have been misinterpreted and misrepresented, but May was hightly inventive and at all times captivating. His hero quickly earns the name "Old Shatterhand," and proves that he is truly no Greenhorn, surpassing the brilliance of all Indian braves, even the fabled Winnetou. With every turn t ...more

My friend, Erika, told me about Karl May. She told me this because at that time I was taking course or german languange. She told me that he was a very famous German writer.

So the next time I spent my time in a bookshop I picked up this book. I could never enough thankful to Erika. I really enjoy this book. It is a great adventure book. I felt like I was in the history and it's like watching 'indiana jones'.

Amazingly the writer wrote this story when he was in a prison and he had never been to U

Tulisan Karl May begitu khas. Sosok protagonisnya sedikit banyak menggambarkan sosok si penulis.

I read this book a long time ago when I really crushed to Kary May and his works.

This book is the first (and beginning) American Series of Karl May. It begins when Carlie (or later known as Old Shatter hand) came to the USA from Germany and worked for construction. It led him to meet his blood brother and his best friend, Winnetou, the head of Apache tribal after the death of his father.

It describes why Carlie and Winnetou had quarrel and how it turned to friendship. How Winnetou's father and

I forgot the time I started reading this book, but perhaps I was right, it was in the middle of May. I read it in Bahasa which means, it is translated. At first, I saw this book in a bookstore accidentally but I was so interested. One thing came to my mind, this book was about friendship because of the description of the book, but it was more than that. This book is so amazing, interesting, page-turning and thrilling! I could remember I smiled a lot while I was reading the book, there were some ...more

Karl May's classic is the German answer to James Fenimore Cooper's The Leatherstocking Tales. Critics find fault with his lack of verisimilitude and authenticity, especially in view of the fact that he had no personal experience with American natives and had never seen the landscapes he was describing in his books.

However, I would assert that his depiction of the fate of the indigenous population of North America is much more sympathetic and honest than many contemporary accounts of American-bor

I read it in Indonesia version.
Reading this book for the sake of my memories of my eldest sister. She really liked this book when she was at junior high school but the book was divided into some thinner series back then.
It was entertaining at first... but in the end mr May's bombastic style really made me tired.... hwa hwa.

Karl May was one of my favourite writers as a Kid. Even back then I knew that although he pretends to have lived all these adventures that was actually quite wrong. Rereading his books as an adult made me realise that as a politically correct, feminist modern adult, I can not like these books as much as I used to. Kara ben nemsi/ old shatterhand is overbearing, arrogant, patronising, know it all. He is racist and unbelievably annoyingly christian, to the extent that he wouldnt even consider marr ...more

Fascination book ... Karl May is one of a kind :)

At 500+ pages, this thing is a monster for a non-native speaker. The good news is, once you get the American Western vocab down (auf Deutsch), it moves quicker.
Classic adventure story that explains (and helped create)the occasional German obsession with the American West and Native Americans. But who's complaining? Without fairy tales, I doubt we would be equally obsessed with castles. German man goes out west, gets captured by Indians, makes new friends, fights bad guys, etc. The story bogs dow

Winnetou is the fictional Native American hero of several novels written by German author Karl May (1842 - 1912), including the sequel Winnetou I - Winnetou III.
I read these adventure stories about the American Wild West as a kid and absolutely loved them. Some of them have been translated into English now.

Winnetou is the wise chief of the Apache Tribe, and Old Shatterhand is the author's (German-American) alter ego and Winnetou's white blood brother. In their first encounter, Old Shatterhand f

Old Shatterhand and….The Three Musketeers

What do they have in common? Not much, except that I’ve read them a long, long time ago and I just happen to remember that.
How?
My daughter just finished reading the Three Musketeers, which she enjoyed: she has finished reading them in the subway. As we travel to and from Le Lycee Francais, we spend about 40 minutes underground with…the musketeers. If it weren’t a captivating read, Hannah would have abandoned it a long time ago.

I read this because my father gave me the book on tape in German. I guess they were a big hit there, and I never really listened to them so I thought the least I could do was read the book.

I was grateful I did, since despite it being a simple book it still kept me interested. The focus being Old Shatterhand, a "tenderfoot" whiteman working to survey an area out west for the railroad who is fascinated with American Indians. The book tells of his many dangerous adventures with two different tribe
