In the inaugural issue of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought in 1966, Frances Menlove bravely wrote: “The very nature of the Church demands honesty, which is inherent in its mission to seek truth. What are the motives behind dishonesty? Perhaps it is the desire in everyone to protect that which they love. If one admits to past disasters, misdirection, failings, then it ...more

I thought this book was excellent. I know that Frances Lee Menlove is somewhat of a divisive figure and that most of her work is published by Dialogue and Sunstone but still...the book is even handed and deals reasonably with controversy.

The essays and sermons included here are tender and sincere. Menlove has a voice that deserve to be heard by a much wider audience. Fantastic job. I attended one of Menlove's devotionals at Sunstone and was very impressed by her love for the Mormon tradition and her criticisms of its failings. This compilation summarized some of those devotionals as well as added essays I had not read. I particularly appreciated "Untangling Faith and Belief" which clarifies concepts I have been thinking about for some time from Paul Tillich and Marcus Borg.

I love the perspective Frances Menlove brings to the table! I have attended many of her morning devotionals at Sunstone symposiums, and they are always a highlight for me. This little book contains some of these sermons, which I am glad to have in print, as well as other essays that provided my husband and me many nights worth of good devotional reading.
