Chronicles of a Crazy Chick recounts the misadventures of Pittman—a brutally frank, flippant and sometimes sexually frustrated female – through the ins and outs of relationships, including the one with herself where she pens a letter to the Lord asking for guidance when her life is in disarray. Katina explores surviving a sexless relationship where she employs extreme measures against her partner, stalking a dude in the name of sex, denouncing online dating after failed attempts at finding love, longing for a lover lost to murder and suffering an episode of hypochondria when thinking she was exposed to HIV. Spoken in Pittman’s candid and crass voice, these page-turning and laugh-out-loud essays tackle issues facing a modern day woman with intimate and irreverent details. These stories unveil the humor in even the serious of situations.
I really love-love-loved these well-written, revealing and relatable stories on dating for the modern woman; however, I must warn that this writer is not for the fainthearted, prudish or pretentious. Her writing style is very raw, real, and uninhibited, giving us all the juicy and unfiltered details, as expected from a great reading experience. This book was a fresh approach to the stream-of-consciousness writings about relationships, basically Sex and the City stories written by a black woman, but relatable to all women. Carrie Bradshaw’s wit and Samantha’s bawdiness are delivered in one package, a one-woman cast of SATC. This book had me laughing-out-loud so many times.
She exposes her vulnerabilities and shares her frustrations with finding a man in a metropolis, which has its own share of woes. Outside of her dating escapades, she also focuses on finding herself within these pages, something that so many females forget to do. She brings it back home at the end, letting the reader know that through her journey of finding love, the true measure is love for oneself. Also, at the end of the book, I loved that she briefly touched on the topic of low self-esteem women who define themselves through their mates, glimmers of a modern day “Feminista.” This book was written in a very strong, moving, hilarious and captivating voice.
I am looking forward to reading more work by this author (hopefully a follow-up to this book?). I am not sure that this will happen, being that she seems to have found happiness with herself and a man in the last chapter. This is a “Must Read” if you want to explore the mind of a creative, intriguing and comical woman. In my Wendy Williams voice, she's my friend in my head.
Would I recommend this book? Most Definitely! To Whom? All my educated and genteel girlfriends who could quickly flip the script and give their gritty side, a trait deftly demonstrated by this author. By reading the title, “The Chronicles of a Crazy Chick,” I expected nothing cerebral, just a zany chicklit book to help me unwind on a solitary and relaxing Friday night, along with my glass of Cabernet. This book lived up to my exact expectation!
WOW! Where do I Begin????? I heart this author, along with this book. She’s like the NeNe Leakes of the literary world, in-your-face with no apologies. She wrote on pages what others only think about, but don’t dare utter. It was a quick and humorous read with crazy contents that definitely lives up to the title. I read it in one day, because I couldn’t put it down. I even found myself going back and rereading some chapters, because I found them so funny.
This book definitely lived up to the author's back of the cover description. It was a real page turner. As I was reading the book, I laughed out loud to myself and felt like I was inside the writer's head. I appreciated the ending as the writer finds herself and admits to her follies in life and relationships.
