The War Before Mine has two settings. 2006 in Australia and the years around WW2 in the UK. This is a very emotional tale dedicated to the 7000 children shipped to Australia between the years of 1947 and 1970 as orphans. Children often treated as "nobodies" who had love and parentage withdrawn from their precious lives.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I've read plenty of wartime boy meets girl stories; but this one really gripped me due to Alex's chapters interspersed with the main story. It is this story, especially the memories we see of Alex's childhood that really got to me.

Both Rosie and Philip are incredibly strong characters and they both have absolutely amazing character development. The only thing that I really didn't get was how it took Rosie 6 months to realise what was going on. Then again I gue

A brilliant book with a unique approach to tackling the war. I felt that it was an opportunity missed as although it tackled the issue of what happened to children born out of wedlock during the war and how the women dealt with this. As Rosie was a Romany I felt had the book explored how the Romanies dealt with and participated in the war would have been even more interesting.
