A bit of a curate's egg. The contents include poems, essays, excerpts from novels, etc. There are some excellent pieces, including several about Beethoven (Wagner's account of his fictitious 'pilgrimage' is included), good excerpts from works by Elias Canetti and Thomas Mann, and Bernard Levin's life-threateningly hilarious 'The Year of the Missing Lemon Juice.' There are also some extremely boring ones by Thomas Hardy, Katherine Mansfield and others. The poetry, too, is various: good stuff from ...more
