An excellent biography on Johnny Carson by the lawyer who worked and played (almost twenty-four-seven) with Johnny.

The publisher provided this copy for me to review.

My Take
This was a very well-done story about Johnny Carson, warts and all. Sad for his awful childhood and the influences that followed him into adulthood. The struggles to win a parent's approval. Beautiful for the laughter he brought to so many people. I remember sitting with my sister at the foot of my parents' bed when we were ki

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Henry Bushkin met Johnny Carson early in his career as a lawyer which led to him becoming Johnny's attorney and business partner. Bushkin can really write. I have read a lot of memoirs and really love to read all the gossipy, tell all ones. This doesn't disappoint. You get all of the behind the scenes action along with insight into what made Johnny Carson tick. Although I don't know if anyone could really know exactly what drives someone, Bushkin came pretty close to knowing e

Simply fabulous! Loved it!
Aimee (Getting Your Read On)
This is the story of Johnny Carson as remembered by his long time lawyer, Henry Bushkin. The story that unfolds about the personal and behind the scenes life of Johnny was to me, mostly sad. Even though Johnny's work was in entertainment and laughter, his personal life was anything but that.

Bushkin paints a picture of a very real man with problems and issues. Alcoholism, bad business dealings, marital affairs, strained family relations, health problems. . . You name it, Johnny had it. Many of hi

I am old enough that I can say I was an adult when Johnny Carson retired. I have fond memories of watching The Tonight Show with my husband, and of occasionally catching a glimpse of the show when I was a child. I didn't always get the jokes, but I always laughed along with the crowd. My favorite Carson character was Carnac the Magnificent.

A Hard Act to Follow is the personal story of Johnny Carson's life from 1972-1988 by his lawyer, aide-de-camp and closest friend during that time. The story i

Before there was a Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, or Jimmy Fallon...there was Johnny Carson. A regular fixture in the late night talk show world. He's the late night talk show host I grew up with and the man truly paved the way for the current crop of talk show hosts.

This book is written by his lawyer who became one of Carson's closest friends and someone who knew Carson better than anyone else. Bushkin gives us an inside look into the man and the world he lived in. We learn what drove

Johnny Carson. You know! Back then from NBC's "The Tonight Show"! We ALL remember hearing these words: "Heeeeeeeeeer'es Johhhnnnnnnnyyy"! Ed McMahon would introduce him as every night. (This is mentioned in the book, too!) Every 4x a week!
I watched the last half of his career (about 10 years) of The Late Show, too! My Grandfather even bought my Grandmother a special TV with a timer on it (LOL!) for their bedroom where she would not go to sleep until she got to watch the show every night! 1-1/2 h

Let me begin by saying something--this book is long, but well worth the read if you are a fan of old TV and even classic movies. I only knew a little bit about Johnny Carson when I started this book. I remember growing up, and his "Tonight Show" was on. I was too young, and it was on too late. Therefore, I never watched it. My mother felt it was inappropriate for me, and I did not quesiton it.

As I read through the book, I can completely appreciate why I did not watch the show growing up. The boo

After watching late night television starring Johnny Carson, and seeing the man that everyone else saw - a talented comedian, it was interesting to read about the "behind the scenes" Johnny Carson; a man so few knew. Johnny Carson's closest friend, Henry Bushkin, did an outstanding job capturing the life and times of Johnny Carson in this book.

I was impressed by his candor and humor. We all saw the Johnny Carson who entertained us nightly for so many years, and as well as we thought we knew him,
