Magical Mayhem is the first of many anthologies to come from new tween/teen publisher Ambush Books. Compiled from a wide assortment of emerging YA talent plus award-winning veteran authors, this anthology truly has something for everyone featuring short tales that will twist your brain and wrap around your soul. From the creepy jumble of Eldritch Black’s ‘Three Curses for Trixie Moon” to the gorgeous magical realism of Anna-Marie McLemore’s “Lovesick”, Magical Mayhem is the perfect bedtime companion for a cold autumn’s night.
Lynda K. Scott isn't really an alien or from another planet. If she was, she and her alien kitten, Wookie, would be headed to Alpha Centuri or Deneb to play tourist and write about what they find. Lynda is actually a 'ridge runner' from Kentucky, who likes to tell tales that entertain and amaze. Wookie, however, is an alien aka Queen of the Universe. At least, that's what she tells everyone.
Magical Mayhem is a lot of magic with a little bit of mayhem. Most of the stories were great...but there were a couple that required some more editing. Big time. One in particular, I ended up skipping because there were so many mistakes I just couldn't stand it anymore. I especially liked 'A Piece of You' by Rhonda Helms; 'My Sister's a Witch' by Laurie McLean (probably because of the '65 Shelby Mustang); 'Drusila and the Bear' by Pam Van Hylckama Vliegm (now that's a mouthful); and 'The Gate' by Carol Wolf.
All in all, a great anthology of magic from all kinds of places.
