Η ψυχρότητα και ο κυνισμός της Κλαίρης τον κλονίζουν, αποφασίζει όμως να αντιμετωπίσει τον εγωισμό της νεαρής γυναίκας του και να καταφέρει να την κερδίσει με τον καιρό. Έτσι εξακολουθεί να την φροντίζει και να της συμπαραστέκεται στις δύσκολες στιγμές, έχοντας ωστόσο εγκαταλείψει κάθε προσπάθεια στενότερης επικοινωνίας μαζί της. Αυτή ακριβώς η αξιοπρεπής και σταθερή συμπεριφορά του, κάνουν σιγά-σιγά την Κλαίρη να τον εκτιμήσει, να τον ζηλέψει και, τελικά, να τον αγαπήσει βαθιά. Όσο μάλιστα ο Φίλιππος συνεχίζει να την αγνοεί, αυτή η αγάπη της μετατρέπεται σε παράφορο και ασυγκράτητο έρωτα.

Αν και δεν πιστεύω καθόλου στη διάκριση των βιβλίων σε καλοκαιρινά και μη αναγνώσματα αν έπρεπε να το κάνω όμως τότε θα χαρακτήριζα τον αρχισιδηρουργό το ιδανικό καλοκαιρινό ανάγνωσμα για την παραλία ή το μπαλκονάκι. Ρομαντζάδα, hate to lovers ειδύλλιο, μελόδραμα με ρετρό περιτύλιγμα. Αγάπησα.

Había oído que llamaban a este libro el "Orgullo y prejuicio" francés. Y lo tiene muy bien merecido.
Ha sido sorprendente, maravilloso y muy tierno.

En la historia nos presentan a Clara, una chica orgullosa y altiva, que muere de aburrimiento y pena esperando el regreso de su prometido, Gastón. Cual es su sorpresa cuando por fin vuelve Gastón, que este viene prometido a su más feroz enemiga, Atenea.
Desesperada y humillada, Clara en un ataque de cólera, acepta la propuesta de matrimonio de Felipe, un joven ingeniero que esta prendado de ella completamente.
¿Que ganará?¿El amor o el orgullo?

Está muy bien escrito, Ohnet no se pierde mucho en descripciones ni lenguaje repipi.
Le deja todo el peso a la historia de la pareja principal. Para mí, todo un acierto.

Desde luego, Derblay está a la altura de Darcy.

Εξαιρετικό μυθιστόρημα του 18ου αιώνα, ιδιαίτερα ως προς την σκιαγράφηση των χαρακτήρων. Είναι αλήθεια ότι τόσο το μάλλον παρωχημένο συγγραφικό ύφος όσο και ο εξαιρετικά μελοδραματικός τρόπος σκέψης και έκφρασης των ηρώων ξενίζουν ένα σύγχρονο αναγνώστη, αλλά παρόλαυτα διαβάζεται με ενδιαφέρον.

Οφείλω μία συγγνώμη στους συντελεστές της ταινίας "Πολύ αργά για δάκρυα" (1968), της οποίας θυμόμουν αμυδρά την (παρόμοια με την πλοκή του βιβλίου) υπόθεση, και υπέθεσα ότι είχαν "κλέψει" το στόρι από το βιβλίο. Από μια επιφανειακή έρευνα στο διαδίκτυο διαπίστωσα ότι η ταινία ήταν αναγνωρισμένη κινηματογραφική μεταφορά του μυθιστορήματος, και μάλιστα ιδιαίτερα επιτυχημένη ως προς την προσαρμογή του στην ελληνική πραγματικότητα της δεκαετίας του '60, απ' ότι θυμάμαι τουλάχιστον.

Ποιό είναι το αντίθετο του έρωτα; Ο θάνατος. Το δίπολο έρωτας - θάνατος κυριαρχεί στο βιβλίο. Πόσο μας θολώνει την κρίση όταν επιβάλλεται ο εγωισμός στον έρωτα; Και πόση δύναμη μπορεί να μας δώσει ο έρωτας; Αυτά και πολλά άλλα ερωτήματα αναδύονται καθώς κυλάει η ιστορία, όπου ο Φίλιππος ενσαρκώνει ένα πρότυπο άντρα των αλλοτινών χρόνων, αν υπήρξε και ποτέ βέβαια.

Realmente esta historia me ha encantado, no esperaba que me gustase tanto, pero así ha sido. La sociedad francesa de la época retratada con fidelidad, sin tratar de ajustarse solo a la norma social, sino que se muestran los comportamientos poco aceptables de la nobleza y de la alta burguesía del momento.

El orgullo y la altivez de Claire se contraponen con el amor y la fortaleza de Philippe, la relación entre ellos sucede de una manera poco común pero que nos muestra una manera interesante y verídica de lo que sucedía al unir en matrimonio dos clases distintas y en constante lucha.

La manera de narrar con delicadas descripciones y diálogos cuidados nos lleva a sumergirnos más en esta historia, que me ha recordado un poco a Norte y Sur, de Gaskell y que ha sido muy interesante y entretenida de leer. La recomiendo sin reparos.

I first read this book in highschool and I believe this, along with Pride and Prejudice, are the books that forever shaped my taste in romances: lots of drama, dark, taciturn, proud & brooding heroes, unrequited love and a heroine who comes to recognize what she's been ignoring until it's almost too late.

The heroine in Ironmaster is a young, proud, beautiful but impoverished titled lady who's in love for ages with her second (or is it third?) cousin, an equally handsome but also impoverished aristocrat, who's in love with her as well. Unfortunately, said cousin is too ambitious to marry for love alone so in the end he breaks their engagement and marries the daughter of a rich bourgeois. In a fit of jealousy and despair the heroine decides to accept the local Ironmaster's marriage proposal. The Ironmaster is a young, rich man from simple origins who's made his own fortune from scratch. He's madly in love with the heroine and though he knows she doesn't love him back, he believes she cares and respects him enough to make this marriage work. He will discover though in a very ugly scene during their wedding night, that she detests him, considers him inferior and is still desperately in love with her cousin. Proud as he is, he agrees with the heroine to keep their marriage in name only but tell nothing to anyone else and play the happy couple instead.

After a while the heroine starts to see how honorable and decent her husband is, how well respected he is and begins to appreciate him for what he's worth. He's shut her off completely though and keeps a distance she cannot close, until the cousin and his wife come back to town. The cousin seems repentant for having married someone else as he's still in love with the heroine and tries to seduce her while his wife, believing the heroine happily in love with her husband (the Ironmaster), starts flirting with him wanting to hurt her (those two have a past back from finishing school). After many a sleepless night for all of our heroes, the whole situation explodes in a dramatic climax where everything comes out in the open.

I must admit I reread it recently and though the writing -or perhaps the greek translation- is not up to what I remembered it to be, the plot itself is mesmerizing. This book has everything I ever liked in romances and I think it probably is the very reason I like these specific features in my romances till now. No matter how many books I'll read, this one will always have a special place in my heart.

2015 Reading Challenge #02: A classic romance.

"Fogosa y altanera, tuvo que batirse con quien era más fuerte, y ahora le complacía verse dominada.
Amaba al hombre que le puso una mano en el hombro y la obligó a inclinarse, y le amaba porque le había hecho sentir el peso de su voluntad. El era su dueño."

Con una escritura mediocre, personajes pobremente desarrollados y una trama que carece del ingenio, e inclusive del humor, de otras obras de ese estilo, Felipe Derblay no posee ninguna característica que estimule a su lectura.

Llamar a esto el "Orgullo y Prejuicio francés" es insultar la independencia de Elizabeth y la firmeza de carácter de Mr. Darcy. Es burlarse de los lectores.

Σε πρωτη αναγνωση είναι ενα σεμνο ρομαντζο του 19ου αιωνα.
Οχι ακριβως. Για μενα, που το εχω πολυτιμο οικογενειακο κειμηλιο από τον πατερα μου(που προτιμουσε τον Σεξπιρ και τον Τολστοι από τα ρομαντζα), η ιστορια εχει πολύ περισσοτερο βαθος.
Είναι ενα αιχμηρο κοινωνικο σχόλιο για τη γαλλικη κοινωνια της εποχης. Η χρεοκοπημενη (εν αγνοια της) αριστοκρατισσα Κλαιρη δεχεται την προταση γαμου του πλουσιου αστου, χωρίς τιτλο, Φιλιππου, με μονο σκοπο να σωσει την περιφανια της μετα την απορριψη του επισης φτωχου και απληστου αριστοκρατη ξαδερφου της. Η συμπεριφορα των 2 "αρχοντων" δειχνει ποσο εγωιστες και ανικανοι είναι να διαχειριστουν την σκληρη πραγματικοτητα της ζωης τους χωρίς χρηματα.Επισης, φαινεται πεντακαθαρα ποσο προθυμα χρησιμοποιουν τους αλλους για τους πιο ιδιοτελεις σκοπους τους, χωρίς καμια τυψη.
Αν η Κλαιρη δεν ήταν τοσο τυφλη, θα ηξερε ότι ο Φιλιππος την αγαπουσε πολύ και δε ζητησε προικα για να την παντρευτει (ήταν ευκαταστατος επιχειρηματιας), επειδη μονο την ιδια ηθελε. Επισης, θα εβλεπε ότι ο ξαδερφος κοιτουσε μονο το τομαρι του και θα την "πουλουσε" στην πρωτη ευκαιρια. Αυτό εκανε αλλωστε. Βρηκε μια νεοπλουτη, ασπονδη εχθρό της Κλαιρης, την παντρευτηκε και της την πετουσε καταμουτρα στις κονωνικες εκδηλωσεις, αδιαφορωντας ποσο την πληγωνε.
Καποια στιγμη, όταν καταλαβε ότι ο Φιλιππος διεθετε αξιοπρεπεια, αυτοσεβασμο και δε θα την παρακαλουσε, ξαναθυμωσε αλλα ήταν πολύ αργα. Ειχε δειξει τον χαρακτηρα της και δεν τον εντυπωσιασε καθολου. Επρεπε να δει με τα ματια της ποσο καθαρμα ήταν ο πρωην αγαπημενος για να καταλαβει ποσο αξιολογο ανθρωπο παντρευτηκε και ας μην ήταν αριστοκρατης.
Ολο αυτό δεν είναι μια μελο ιστορια, είναι η κοντρα της ανερχομενης αστικης ταξης, που διεθετε πλουτο, με την παλια, ξεπεσμενη αριστοκρατια που σνομπαρε ολο τον υπολοιπο κοσμο, παρα την χρεοκοπια της.
Δυσκολο να τους λυπηθει κανεις, ετσι όπως υποτιμουσαν τους εργαζομενους ανθρωπους, απορροφημενοι από την αργοσχολη αλαζονεια τους.
Δε θα το ελεγα ΑΡΛΕΚΙΝ εποχης επειδη το πνευμα του συγγραφεα ήταν τελειως διαφορετικο.

Como siempre dÉpoca haciendo ediciones deliciosamente bonitas y con inmejorables traduciones. Una trama muy bien desarrollada, con personajes maravillosos y otros no tanto, amor, lucha de clases, odio y sobre todo orgullo. Una historia decimonónica, que recuerda a los folletines de la época, y que por fín podemos leer en español al "desconocido" Ohnet.

La historia nos sumerge de lleno en Francia de la época (finales del siglo XIX), más concretamente en el tema de las clases sociales y los problemas que ello conlleva, la ruina, la conveniencia, el despecho, etc. pero en definitiva una historia de amor que nos dará momentos de todo tiempo, la he disfrutado mucho y creo que tiene bastante en común con Orgullo y Prejuicio pero sobre todo el "orgullo" por parte de nuestros protagonistas.

Trovato su una bancarella, libro amatissimo da mia nonna, classe 1896.

Romance scritto nel 1881 regge ancora, anzi molto meglio di tanta paccotiglia Harmony.
Inoltre ambientato molto bene nel contesto sociale dell'epoca mette in luce il dissidio tra aristocrazia e borghesia industriale in ascesa.
Nessuna coscienza ecologica, troppo presto, la ciminiera fumante simbolo della modernità.
Neo una certa fretta ,soprattutto nel finale.

Devo chiedere scusa a mia nonna ma dato che nessuno della mia famiglia avesse letto il libro,abbiamo sembre usato la locuzione "padrone delle ferriere" in senso spregiativo, soprattutto usata nei confronti di gatti arroganti e padroni del divano. Ignoravamo la bontà d'animo di Philippe.

Philippe Derblay o Amor y orgullo, es la obra más vendida del autor Georges Ohnet, uno de los más prolíficos dramaturgos y novelistas franceses. La historia, publicada en 1882 como una obra de teatro La Maitre de forges (El dueño de la herrería), toma vida a finales del siglo XIX en un pueblo francés mostrando las diferencias de clases entre la decadente aristocracia francesa y el auge de la burguesía industrial.
Claire de Beaulieu, una aristócrata francesa arruinada por los derroches cometidos de su padre, acepta por despecho la proposición de matrimonio de Philippe Derblay, ingeniero y maestro herrero, cuando descubre que su actual prometido el duque de Bligny se ha comprometido con otra a sus espaldas. El matrimonio entre Claire y Philippe resulta todo un desastre, pues el orgullo de Claire y el corazón roto de Philippe abrirán una brecha de desencuentros y desilusiones entre ambos. Sin embargo será la paciencia, la nobleza, la perseverancia y el respeto del trato de Philippe hacia Claire, lo que hará que Claire descubra el significado del verdadero amor.
Aunque muchos comparan esta obra con Orgullo y Prejuicio de Jane Austen, y en efecto guarda algunas similitudes con la misma, la prosa de Ohnet es mucho más simple que la de Austen y en mi opinión, de menor calibre literario. Sin embargo es una novela deliciosa por su simpleza y por las descripciones que muestra entre el choque de ambas clases sociales.
Ésta es una novela que desarrolla una trama costumbrista de estilo romántico en una época en la que se publicaba bajo una rígida rutina naturalista, y es este matiz, el antagonismo del autor hacia la aristocracia francesa de ese período histórico, lo que caracterizará el resto de sus obras.
Cabe destacar la magnífica edición ilustrada de la editorial y la calidad del papel. Sin duda, un clásico de obligada lectura para cualquier amante de la novela romántica.

No conocía este libro y por ello le estaré infinitamente agradecida a Cristina.
Aunque el estilo es decimonónico en su expresión, la historia es maravillosa y describe perfectamente las idas y venidas anímicas de los 4 personajes principales que están perfectamente resueltos. Entre todos ellos destaca Philippe, con su infinita ternura y su carácter serio, noble y tozudo también.
Hay momentos emocionantes en los que se asiste a cruces de acción y diálogo entre las dos parejas que parece una representación teatral totalmente realista. Las cualidades buenas y malas de los protagonistas se observan, no son de cartón piedra y se les entiende siempre, aunque sean deplorables a veces. Ninguno es perfecto y todos están imbricados en una red de afectos y desafectos de lo más interesante.
El final es apasionado, algo exagerado y tremendamente corto aunque eficaz y eso me ha dejado con ganas de algo más. Aun así, es una gran obra que recomiendo de corazón.

Philippe Derblay o Amor y orgullo es una dulce historia de amor, que te mantiene pegada a sus páginas, escrita de una manera que resulta adictiva, una vez que empiecen a leer no podrán parar, porque querrán saber si nuestros protagonistas tendrán su final feliz. Si son amantes de las novelas románticas están tardando en conocer y suspirar por Philippe.

Para empezar dire que no recomiendo esta novela.
Lo mejor que tiene es la hermosa edición, pero el hecho de que la propia editorial lo comparara en el propio libro con NORTE Y SUR o ORGULLO Y PREJUICIO te hace tener una expectativas bastante altas, y en la realidad esta novela no tiene el nivel necesario para estar a la altura de estos títulos, es con muchas mas floja, tanto en personajes como en como esta llevado la historia, al menos para mí.
La narrativa es bastante correcta, el argumento es interesante pero no está llevado de una forma que me ansíe por saber mas o leer mas, con personajes sosos y con una aún mas sosa ambientación.
Este libro es una triste decepción.

2.5 ⭐ La lectura es ágil y entretenida, pero no deja de ser un folletín, además de que el final me ha parecido abrupto y mediocre.

Y no, no es "El Orgullo y Prejuicio" francés, ni tampoco una combinación de esta obra con "Norte y Sur" - hay una razón por la que los nombres de Jane Austen y Elizabeth Gaskell han perdurado, mientras que el de Georges Ohnet ha caído en el olvido -.

Si tuviera que comparar a "Philippe Derblay" con algo, sería con una telenovela mexicana, donde los malos son malísimos, los buenos buenísimos, y las situaciones rayan en el ridículo.

Para una tarde de domingo está bien, pero no me parece que esté a la altura de otros clásicos.

I was eagerly recommended this book by my sister and it did not dissappoint me. My expectations were fulfilled when reading it and the story became really interesting and catching from the very beginning. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes nineteenth century novels, 19th century taste. The edition is fantastic as all books edited by D'Epoca ed. , hard cover, easy to read font size, beautifully finished.

I'm not sure how great the book really is but personally i enjoyed it thoroughly. It was interesting to read a romantic melodrama written by a man that didn't focus only on the womans perspective. The characters weren't presented as completely perfect, neither the love story. I liked how it touched on the human nature and the ego of a person, the way it affects relationships and the way it gets in the middle of love between two souls. Superficially, many could be bothered by this not politically correct love-story... I believe a more raw and thuthfull approach, like this one, is far more edifying and relatable. Yes it's full of romantic characteristics, idealisation, exaggerations etc. though it still provides enough food for thought and contemplation.
Now, I must admit i was really into the romance trope: man more in love than the woman, slow burn ... so that explains a lot about how little it took me to finish it and how much i enjoyed this book. Overall, a really nice light, summery read.

Philippe Derblay ha sido una sorpresa muy agradable descubierta gracias a la reedición de Editorial D'Epoca en 2014. Es una novela muy bonita y "romántica", un folletín de época y uno de esos libros que necesitas de vez en cuando y que son un buen "culebrón".
Literatura francesa de época, llena de pasión, diferencias de clases, secundarios muy divertidos y con muchos guiños, y bueno, unos personajes principales que te engancharán de una manera que tendrás que seguir leyendo para saber si quedarán juntos o no. Efectivamente, Claire, la señora del Orgullo y Philippe, el inmaculado y perfecto protagonista, que no conoce a las mujeres muy bien...
Se la compara con Orgullo y Prejuicio y Norte y Sur, pero en Philippe Derblay hay una perspectiva diferente, masculina y sobre todo francesa, y de una época posterior a las de Gaskell y Austen, lo cual confiere a la obra de un toque sentimental y apasionado, que la hace muy emocionante y adictiva. Además, se nota el transfondo teatral de su autor.
¡Muy, muy recomendada! :) Y hace que tenga muchas ganas de leer otras obras de Georges Ohnet.

Vintage French literature, full of passion, class differences, and fun side with many nods, and well, some main characters that will engage you in a way you have to keep reading to find out whether or not to stay together. Indeed, Claire, Mrs. Pride and Philippe, the flawless and perfect male character, who does not know women very well ...
Compared with Pride and Prejudice and North and South, Philippe Derblay is a different perspective, male and especially French, and later to the eras of Gaskell and Austen, which gives the work a sentimental and passionate touch, which makes it very exciting and addictive. In addition, the background is theatrical.
Very, very recommended! :) And I have looking forward to reading other works by Georges Ohnet .

L'ho letto a 18 anni e mi sono innamorata del buon Filippo che ama Clara ma lei ama Gastone che ama solo i soldi di Atenaide!
Ho trepidato per Clara accecata da un amore infantile per l'infame Gastone, ho sperato che aprisse gli occhi e riconoscesse il vero amore di Filippo così buono, così giusto, così umano con i suoi dipendenti .... e non ho mai capito perchè si dica "il padrone delle ferriere" per parlare di un bieco capitalista visto che Filippo è più sul coté paternalistico che plutocratico. Mah.
Comunque l'ho riletto recentemente ed è veramente un Harmony coi fiocchi! (e poi la mia edizione è del 1915 ed è stata letta e riletta da zie, prozie, nonne e bisnonne!)
