Judith Sonnet is becoming one of my favourite indie authors and Eels is her love letter to the silly creature feature B movies of the past.

Eels follows a professor and two students on a yacht as they make a discovery of a new species of Eel who can possess host bodies by entering them by any means necessary. Even though all precautions are taken the Eels escape from their enclosure to cause mayhem on the boat.

We meet two local brothers living in a spring break town who have been enjoying the good life as spring break comes to an end. On the beach one night they meet a pair of sisters and hit it off deciding to go to a cove for some drinks, party and good old fashioned adult "fun". That is until they encounter the eels and all the fun abruptly ends in blood soaked fashion.

This short novella is full of body horror! As the eels take over the human bodies they decay rapidly and result in them being reduced to piles of grotesque liquids, skin and stench. Our Eels are inventive creatures and take any means or way necessary to enter our characters in places you definitely don't want if you get my drift. The death scenes are just gross with plenty of over the top blood soaked scenes with tons of slime and melting away body parts described in vivid fashion.

This story had it all plenty of sex, creature attacks, gore and a lot of humour thrown in as well. The afterward in which Judith reveals her love of b movies and the inspiration of certain movies on the story and how she has transferred the fun and stupidness of those movies into this very engaging read. I knew I was going to enjoy this from the very first sentence of the book which is "The water lapped at the shore like a lazy lover's tounge". Its this humorous writing and very descriptive body horror and bonkers WTF ending that make it a must read.

As I said with Brian's book in the series Curse of the Samurai don't expect a edge of your seat horror book that will scare the pants off you but if you want to be highly entertained and have some laughs along the way pick this up and support an indie author.

“I cannot think of the deep sea without shuddering at the nameless things that may at this very moment be crawling and floundering on its slimy bed…”
H.P. Lovecraft,

I love how Judith describes the ocean, with flowing and somewhat suggestive prose.

“The water lapped at the shore like a lazy lover’s tongue.”

“Tangled clumps of seaweed appeared in the division between sand and water, like salad stuck on a pale tooth.”

She just really created this opening scene that transported me right there onto the beach. Right away one of the characters views the setting as a nightmare; he dislikes the water & sees it as a hungry maw, a dirty and detestable place.

His fears are not unfounded as he, his brother, and a pair of bikini clad ladies soon encounter… THE EELS!! Dum! Dum! DUMMMM!

This was a perfectly gory, slimy, splatterpunky, campy throwback to 80s “B” movies.

If there was any doubt that Judith Sonnet could handle the creature feature sub genre of horror in her fantastic novel Deep Dark then this newest novella, is the very proof.

It's also evident that this is the area she should be focusing every new book on. Channeling Harry Adam Knight and even some Tim Curran, Eels! Is one part love letter to B grade monster films, another part splatterpunk. Taking tidbits from current events in the biological sphere, Sonnet takes those slimy and slithery denizens of the deep and makes them even more creepy, crawly, and deadly, while, at the same time, not taking herself too seriously.

Obviously loved how quick paced this was, but at 70 pages, it was just too short. Not that there was anything wrong with a story that could be read in one quick setting (and written, edited, and produced in only 10 days) but I wanted more!

A dumb fun b-movie inspired book that achieved exactly what it said out to do. Thoroughly enjoyable, if not quite what I was expecting.

Loved this short and slimy read! It gave me major “Piranha DD” vibes, I have a soft spot for those deep ocean B-Rated horror movies.

In only 70 pages I was able to really come to like a couple of the main characters, and I thought the story itself was so solid! I love the abrupt ending as well it was *chefs kiss*.

Judith you did an amazing job in just 10 short days! What a fun read.

I know I'm safe at home with a Judith Sonnet book or rather not safe at home if you catch my drift. I'm honestly having such a fun time reading her horror books, they are short, terrifying, gruesome, and incredibly impactful. Jump Scare has been my favorite so far, but I find every book I read from her is different in some way or another from the last.

Summer break is about to end and a pair of brothers are messing about on the beach for good time's sake. That is until a pair of sisters come to join in on the fun. Tonight promises to be an evening of excitement and fun, but when they find a mysterious yacht hidden away inside a small cove, it isn't long before shit hits the fan.

Judith Sonnet has written a fun horror story that's essentially a B-movie in book form. It's cheesy and the characters often make awful decisions, but that's the point and honestly, Judith has done a great job capturing the vibe and atmosphere a B-movie should have. Despite the characters making strange decisions, I did find them quite likable. I do like the idea behind the Eels though, they are an odd creation admittedly with them being creatures that can take over the bodies of other lifeforms, but that only made this book so much more creepy and fun to read.

Overall: It's a neat novella that was a lot of fun to read. 8/10

Ok, eels are creepy enough on their own. Eels that can puppeteer other beings?! That is a new level of horrifying.

This is a straight up B movie on page. The author says so. Teenagers, booze, sex, mad scientists, creatures, bad decisions. It practically writes itself.

The more I read of this author, the more I appreciate their love of all things cheesy. I too love "bad" horror movies. The schlockier the better. This book, like Spatter-Saurus, needs to be made into a movie. As probably do many other books by this author. Then they need to be played at drive-ins because THE DRIVE-IN WILL NEVER DIE!!!

EELS! is so much fun - it's creature feature, 90s-esque, B-movie realness and everything worked so well. It's sort of a body snatching, parasitic, puppet mastery horror adventure and I didn't want the ride to end. I can hear and see these eels squirming and writhing from body to body and it gives me the chills. Seriously. AHH! Some good characters making bonehead (and bonerhead) decisions but this is what allows the story to thrive in the subgenre it's written. You can't help but root for these naïve meatheads in the best way. More creature features, please!

Things are about to get slippery!

It's the last day of spring break!
What else are you gonna do?
Besides, go exploring before you have to head home.

You’re about to see double. There are twins, plus eels.

I bought this for myself on my birthday.
I think it was the perfect present!
This has been on my TBR for a while now.
I finally got it and I'm very happy that I did!
I love anything that has to do with Creature Features!
This felt exactly like being a kid and binging the SyFy channel all day.

A fun ride!

This was a great quick read that reminded me of the creature feature B-Movies of the late 90s early 2000s. I loved it and if you want some fast entertainment well you found it!

Another fun B-Movie monster tribute.

Another short gem from Miss Sonnet. Fun and gory with an interesting species of eel. It’s got that late night monster movie vibe. Highly recommend. Check out Splattersaurus as well. Hell, check out all of her books. You’ll be glad you did.

Like something you might find on tubi, but in book form and much better written. It's very fun and campy while also possessing some pretty chilling imagery. The sound of the dead speaking reminded me of the zombies from Creepshow. If you haven't read Judith yet, unfuck that.

Need another reason to not take a naked midnight romp in the ocean? Well...here it is!
Sonnet never fails to deliver a warped and unique version of splattering fun.

Hopefully people won't think less of me for laughing through the pages.

An entertaining read. A little slow and not as much gore as I was expecting. Not my favourite Judith Sonnet book that I have read but I will definitely be reading more of her work.
