Who knew one gaudy Velvet Elvis could lead to such a heap of haunted trouble?

When Cleo Tidwell said, “I do,” for the third time, she had no idea her marriage vows would be tested by a tacky piece of art. But Cleo’s not the kind of woman to let a velvet-offense-against-good-taste just hang — oh no, she’s on a mission to oust the King. Trouble is, Elvis won’t leave the build

In a cleverly penned, slightly satirical work, Sullivan has perfectly combined cultural references, a very southern setting and feel, and a fast paced plot that is perfectly alluded to through chapter headings that direct the reader to the conclusions that she has devised.

The story is laugh out loud funny, with solidly defined characters, each more quirky and oddly enjoyable than the last. The dialogue is witty and cleverly intertwines necessary elements to move the plot forward while maintainin

Cleo Tidwell is mortified when her husband gives her a velvet Elvis painting for her birthday. Rumors of the painting’s haunted heritage spread, and soon Cleo’s house is a magnet for tourists, the press, Elvis fans, and wacky cults.

This very funny debut novel is a paranormal cocktail with a twist of Elvis. Since his undignified and early death, Elvis has become an irresistable target for parody, but Sullivan cleverly works Elvis trivia and song/movie titles into the story without being corny or

I must say that I was very skeptical about reading this book. I mean, come on, a haunted velvet Elvis? I was pleasantly surprised, though! This book is full of twists and turns that I did not expect. I love how Sullivan incorporated the King of Rock n’ Roll into a paranormal story. She cleverly infused Elvis trivia in ways that cascaded beautifully with the plot. The southern euphemisms throughout the book had me rolling.

I really enjoyed this read. The way Sullivan told the story made me feel l

Susan Abel Sullivan knows the South and knows Southern humor. Her book, Haunted Housewives, calls to mind a combination of Clyde Edgerton, the supernatural, and a bit of horror. It is a wonderful combination, and I was laughing throughout an enjoyable read. This is good writing and good Southern humor. It delves into the often bizarre Elvis culture in the United States, which will have a familiar ring to anyone who knows an Elvis fanatic. This was a splendid read even for a reader like me who pr ...more

HAUNTED HOUSEWIVES is a fast and funny ride that maintains its pace and sense of humor from start to finish. The story features Cleo Tidwell bringing back the terms madcap and whacky fun. Cleo is surrounded by quirky characters, some harmless and some who definitely have evil plans for her. The setting is pure Southern with a dash of gothic and more than a hint of a romance. I really recommend this book for just about everyone who enjoys humor, including mystery readers as well as urban fantasty ...more

I did not know what to think when I started reading this book, but the more I read the more I got into it. The characters were relatable and I got swept up into the story and had to see how it ended. I have recommended this book to quite a few people and I know they are going to enjoy reading it (but they are not getting my copy)

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

If Janet Evanovich and Randy Wayne White had an enchanted love child, she would be a writer like Susan Abel Sullivan, smart, funny, and totally out there. This fast-paced, cozy mystery centers around a diabolical, havoc-wreaking velvet Elvis painting. Heroine Cleo Tidwell must race with the clock to save her sexy husband Bertram from an eternity in limbo. Along the way she tangles with an amusing cast of small town kooks, both celestial and earthbound, and meets with a number of hilarious mishap ...more

Light, silly fun. This book reminds me of the series about Betsy the vampire queen, but this is much more PG.
