This is a decent overview (for beginners) of all the possibilities available to a new investor. A few things are a little outdated, and also there's some recommendations (modern portfolio theory) that are considered suspect post-2008, but otherwise, a good overview of the financial instruments available.

Useful basic guide for a 40something guy like me that is finally making a few dollars and looking for a straightforward way to plan best I can for retirement and the kids' education
