I recieved this book as part of the goodreads giveaway from the publisher.
I really enjoyed this book! It is a heartfelt story of one man's journey, struggles and winding, curved path to Zen. It is an honest look at this man's journey and I like that he was honest and included his own personal doubts, struggles and ultimate growth that he faced in his journey. It is a book I would highly recommend- beautifully written too. Cudos to you Gregory Shepherd! ...more

A Straight Road with 99 Curves, by Gregory Shepard, is the memoir of the author and his journey down the path of Zen. I share the authors roots of Catholicism and the doubts that came with it. However, Mr. Shepard takes its a father than I ever could. He moved to Hawaii and later Japan to follow his path, which is a great deal father than most of us are willing to go.

He drifted into a Trungpa's sangha briefly, but found that oppositely wild and unethical, at least it's leader and his successor, and found his way back to Zen. It's a lovely little memoir of Zen experiences in Hawaii and Japan in the 70's, and also a tale of someone who see

This was an interesting book. The author provided some clever and at times moving portraits of humanity and of himself, and I enjoyed the conclusion.
The zen bits did get a little dry at times, at least to someone who knows next to nothing about it. I also wish the first pages hadn't been quite so negative about religion and life in general, because while it improved quickly, that dampened my enthusiasm for the book.
I'm glad I kept going, however. Overall, the book was well written and rather en ...more

“Go straight along a road with 99 curves” is a Zen koan or transformational case young Gregory Shepherd is given by his roshi (teacher). This koan evolves a dynamic paradox using the intellect to perceive a state of Zen inclusive of yet beyond intellect.
The 99 curves koan was given to Gregory 30 years ago. Today he stands in front of his old zendo (Zen center) Three Clouds Zendo in Japan, staring . .
