I initially rated this novel four stars after a marathon reading session. However, waiting until the next day to write a review I realized that there were some overall problems with this novel that resulted me in giving this just 3 stars.
First off, I loved the first novel in this series, "A Discovery of Witches." I still loved the second novel, "Shadow of Night' but thought that several hundred pages should have been cut from that novel. Deborah Harkness is a historian and at times you just got ...more

Where to start, where to start, where to start....well, let's start at the beginning. This is the third and final installment of the 'All Souls Trilogy' by Deborah Harkness. If you have not read 'Discovery of Witches' that is where this beautiful group of books begins. If you have read it, you may have loved it, or possibly came away a little lukewarm due to the hype surrounding it. “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.”
And so we have the finale! History and Science are still very much part of the narrative, albeit in a more subdue fashion. We’re not in the 16th century any longer but back in the ‘present’, Diana and Matthew catching up with what happened while they time walked, and dealing with deaths, pregnancies, and the long shadow of the Congregation.

The third and final installment in the All Souls Trilogy was my favorite (and that's stretching it!). I lost major interest in this series after trekking SLOWLY through the second book- too mired with extra characters, places, and themes to even make this series feel like it connected.
This book tied everything back together. I enjoyed finding out what happens to all of the characters, and how their lives have changed. The Book of Life itself had a neat ending, and while I found a few sections f ...more

This was my least favorite of the All Souls Trilogy, as it was terribly long and doled out revelations too dramatically. Or maybe I was spoiled by the historical time weaving of the previous book, and having everything take place in the present wasn't adventurous enough for my tastes. The scifi lover in me wanted them to mix it up more!
That said, I was glad to see everything happening with Matthew and Diana, and their family, wrapped up into a semi-peaceful and hopeful package.

I need a Gallowglass spinoff please. Thank you. :)
Edited after second read: I'm thrilled that a fourth book is coming out and I love me some Marcus, but I still need a Gallowglass spinoff.
Third read: Still love it. Still live Gallowglass. Matthew is currently my favorite vampire; partly due to Deb's amazing writing, partly Matthew Goode's onscreen portrayal.

A significant improvement from the second one! My attention did dwindle in the middle, but the beginning and end were much more interesting than I was expecting based on Shadow of Night. A good end to the trilogy.
I have finally completed the All Souls Trilogy! The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness is the final book in this epic series. Again, this installment picks up right where book 2 left off. Matthew and Diana missed quite a bit while they were in Elizabethan London. Diana’s world is about to collapse, but she must stay strong. The Congregation is causing problems, making it more difficult to complete Ashmole 782. Everyone seems to be after the pages. In order to survive, Matthew and Diana must find t

Totally love ❤️❤️❤️ this book and series.
I will review it later, perhaps 😬 I have to get back to my work.
I had been neglected those works for the last five days, can’t delay it anymore!
Bummer!!! 😬😂😜
I need to share this, Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer will play as Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop, everyone who lives in the UK can see this series in 2018! Lucky things!!! *very jealous*

Long wait for a disappointing #3. Perhaps it was just too long between books, It seemed to take an age to get back up to speed on the convoluted story lines and relationships.
However, let's be honest, the real attraction all along has been Matthew and Diana's sexy, simmering connection - yet now they're married and very pregnant = their relationship is now reduced to parental roles and responsibilities. Blech,
It could be argued that some women find overprotective husbands sexy. I'm not one of ...more

Whew!!! Coming in at 560 pages I did a workout every time I picked it up! A mostly satisfactory end to the trilogy. There were one or two threads that weren't quite clear to me, and I felt there was no closure. None of us can know the future, but I sensed that maybe Deborah Harkness may not have totally finished, and left herself room to manoeuvre if she wishes to return - but all in all it was a darn good read
Overall I enjoyed the trilogy. However, the first book was the best.
The Book of Life was a lot darker than the previous ones, and again I felt it could have been 100 or so pages lighter (too many descriptions, dissertations, etc.)
It was a very good book, it just didn’t make me jump.

The end of series – A tale interlacing tales of truths, lies, bravery, shallowness, burdens of past, hopes of future, honesty, loyalty, over seeking happiness & sadness.
“I see you, even when you hide from the rest of the world. I hear you, even when you’re silent.” It was a pure definition of love.”
Love – How easily a tale could be built upon just a word. Diana’s & Matthew’s happily ever after makes one believe in that word.

Was the final book in the trilogy completely written by Deborah Harkness? It seems to have lost the plot. The first book was different; magical, full of details about her life as a scholar, her past, evoked feelings based on her descriptions and had the makings of leading up to an awesome conclusion.
The second book fell into the historical fiction genre and I loved it. Because the setting was so different to the first book it didn't feel like I was reading more of the same stuff and it kept the ...more

Spoilers from the first two installments!
Since the beginning, we’ve followed in the steps of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont as they seek out a lost manuscript called Ashmole 782, otherwise known as The Book of Life. In A Discovery of Witches, we watch the duo fall in love and setting aside Matthew’s exceedingly over-protectiveness we’re introduced to a most interesting world where vampires, witches, and daemons manage to exist in our modern world. In Shadow of Night, we’re taken back through ...more

I’ve been waiting patiently for this book for what seems like forever. When I saw it at BEA I flailed and then found myself waiting in a line I wasn’t expecting to be in just so I could get it into my greedy hands.

Holy snapdoodle, this book is BAD! The first book was passable, though not excellent. The second one was marginally worse, but this one is just terrible.
I had a hard time following the narrative because it simply didn't make sense. The characterisation was on par with a middle school girl's fantasy of the perfect man who for some magical reason cannot be apart from her for a minute without losing his mind.

" Hearts cannot be broken. Diana. And only love makes us truly immortal.
Don't forget, ma lionne." - Matthew
" Our family had begun with the surprising love that developed detween Matthew and me. It grew decause our bond was strong enough to withstand the harted and fear of others. And it would endure because we had discover, like the witches so many centuries ago, that a willingness to change was the secret of survival."- Diana
I am so very disappointed. So very.
I reread the first two books before beginning this one and loved them as much the second time through as I did the first. With great anticipation I began reading The Book of Life. What a let down.
Gone are the rich descriptions and the feeling that you are there in the room. I can no longer taste or smell anything in the world. I could have lived with that, maybe, if I weren't overwhelmed by the ever expanding cast of characters and shifting point of view. Fir ...more

Okay the ending was amazing.. but the book took forever to make me happy. FOREVER.
The Book of Life made me happy. Not necessarily the entire book.. but I definitely did a happy dance because I finished a series! No idea how many I finished this year, or ever, but it was definitely a memorable moment guys! Now back to book, it was good but so long and slow. At one point, I thought I was going to be completely disappointed in everything because I didn't feel like much was happening.

It took me forever to finish this book but I did it in the end. I guess it wasn't what I had in mind. That being said, it was predictable and if not for what happened to Matthew, there was no suspense either.
The pace of the book was impossible once again and I found the first 30% of the book utterly irrelevant and redundant.

Ahh, this was fun, and I'm definitely going to miss this series.
I quite enjoyed the final novel of the All Souls trilogy. It brought the series to a nice conclusion and wrapped things up rather well. Very often, when I'm expecting to find out the "spectacular" ending of a story, I am disappointed by the convenient, and often kind of dumb, way the authors tie their loose ends. In The Book of Life, I felt it was quite the contrary. Whatever I had expect ...more

Sometimes we really shouldn't allow our TBR pile to grow to the extent that we forget there are worthwhile books at the bottom of the pile. I'm saddened to say that I might have left the fate of Diana and Matthew for too long. I read books 1 and 2 in 2013 before the publication of the anticipated finale . Book 2 left me on such a high and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. As Iwas reading The Book of Life, I couldn't help but wonder-- have I passed the whole vampire/witch phase of my
