Тчай е планета, обикаляща около звездата Карина 4269, намира се на 212 светлинни години от Земята. Тя е заселена с четири съперничещи чуждоземни раси, враждуващи помежду си, на нея живеят и местните пнуми, а също и различни човешки видове, някои от които са роби или слуги на чуждоземците. Насекомоподобните пнуми са първоначалните обитатели на Тчай. Историята им се простира на милиони години в миналото и те гледат на нашествениците като на пикантна добавка към блестящото разнообразие на своя свят, макар че по-могъщи раси са ги принудили да се заселят под земята. Еволюционно свързани с тях са фунгите, склонни към самотен живот хищници с чудновати навици. Гущероподобните часки са пристигнали на планетата около стотина хиляди години преди началото на събитията в книгата и са разделени на три враждуващи фракции – декадентските стари часки, цивилизованите сини часки и подивелите зелени часки. Хищните дирдири и амфибийните уонки са дошли сравнително скоро и в началото са воювали помежду си, но в момента поддържат несигурен мир и относителен военен паритет.

В третата книга от "Планетата на приключенията" разузнавачът Адам Рейт продължи да преследва заветната цел - сдобиване с космически кораб и връщане на Земята. Интересите му го забъркаха в опасна игра с расата на насекомоподобните дирдири, обичащи да ловуват хора и да си похапват човешко месце. Екшън на макс, макар и с наивни на моменти авторови решения.

Скиталчествата на Рейт го отведоха в подземните обиталища на най-древната раса на планетата Тчай, но като цяло нищо особено не се случи, сякаш Ванс просто беше отбивал номера, преди да завърши цикъла си. Avontuur, vriendschap, streken en hindernissen. In de boeken die samen de Tschai Cyclus vormen volgen we Adam Reith, een man van de aarde, die probeert te ontsnappen van de vreemde planeet Tschai. Een verhaal over de koppigheid van de mens. Een avontuur waarbij je wilt doorlezen.
De tweede cyclus reeks krijgt van mij een ster minder dan het eerste deel, dit met betrekking tot het laatste boek "De Pnume", wat onnodig langdradig kan zijn op bepaalde punten. De romance die hierin naar voren komt tussen Adam en Zap voelt geforceerd, en Traz mist grotendeels van alle actie. Jammer, maar niet ontoepasselijk. Het is wat men kan verwachten van een verhaal uit de tijd waarin Vance dit geschreven heeft.
Vriendschap is in deze boeken een groot thema en veel van de avonturen worden gevormd en gekenmerkt hierdoor. In deze Vance boeken is de protagonist geen schelm maar een echte held. Beland na een crash op een vreemde planeet komt Adam Reith er al snel achter dat Tschai geen vredige of veilige plek voor mensen is. Hij probeert dan ook koste wat het kost om terug te keren naar de aarde. In zijn queeste wordt hij geholpen door een jongen genaamd Traz en een Dirdirman genaamd Anacho.
Vervelen hoef je je niet wanneer je deze cyclus start. De wereld is wonderwel beschreven door Vance, die wederom menselijke tradities, geloofsovertuigingen en koppigheid feilloos weet te beschrijven in een fictieve en futuristische setting. De mensen in het verhaal zijn soms behulpzaam, maar meestal werken ze juist tegendraads, zijn ze star en koppig, of zijn ze geldbelust. De typische menselijke aard wordt blootgelegd, en een held staat op om de onderdrukte wezens te tonen dat het leven ook anders kan. Dat heeft wel vertrouwen nodig, moed, intelligentie en vooral veel sequijnen (geld). Adam Reith’s spannende avonturen brengen hem te voet door ruige oorden, met de karavaan naar buitenaardse steden, met de boot langs volken met vreemde tradities, met het ruimtevlot langs vijandelijke troepen, en gekidnapped in een zak zelfs tot een ondergrondse wereld. Want er zijn méér dan die drie volken op Tschai.
Voor mij was de trouw van Traz en zijn relatie tot Adam Reith een element waardoor ik deze boeken graag las, en dus wil ik op een persoonlijke noot de reeks aanraden aan de fantasy fans die houden van een goede chemie tussen twee mannelijke protagonisten (en dat mag worden geïnterpreteerd zoals je wilt). Een verhaal vol mooie streken, overwinningen, vriendschap en een goed eind.
Ruimteavonturen, vreemde volken, stoffige steden. Voor liefhebbers van sci fi en fantasy een heerlijk verhaal, maar ook zeker voor diegene die graag lezen over een held die opstaat voor zijn medemensen en op vindingrijke manieren de held wordt van een planeet. Houd je van vriendschappen, dan ook is dit boek mooi. Na het lezen van deze reeks zal je met een goed gevoel achterblijven.

Voor liefhebbers van sci fi en fantasy een heerlijk verhaal, maar ook zeker voor diegene die graag lezen over een held die opstaat voor zijn medemensen en op vindingrijke manieren de held wordt van een planeet. Houd je van vriendschappen, dan ook is dit boek mooi. Na het lezen van deze reeks zal je met een goed gevoel achterblijven.
