If the quality of literature being published in any given year can be judged by the first book we read, watch out world, because 2013 has incredible things in store for us.

Not only does This Jealous Earth - an amazing collection of short stories by Scott Dominic Carpenter - set the literary bar high for the new year, it also has the honor of ushering in the

I made a resolution to read more books this year - and what a way to kick things off with This Jealous Earth. Normally, short story collections aren't my preference, but Carpenter structures this book into three sections with alternating long and short pieces. It kept my read crisp and fresh - and it certainly helps that each story packs an emotional punch.

Every story spoke to me on some level. Carpenter does an incredible job with the voice of each character, capturing an authentic, unique lang

A collection of clever, quirky, believable stories about mundane people falling into, getting stuck, and struggling to extricate themselves from situations of their own making. In "The Tender Knife," an aging Boomer confronts his own existential angst through the sad necessity of having to cull the numbers in his koi pond. The smart aleck kid in "This Jealous Earth" saves his family from the rapture. Who cannot relate to the misdirected frustration that comes from dealing with a bureaucracy that ...more

I received this book as a First Reads giveaway, and I read lots and lots of short stories (24 collections last year, 8 so far this year).

It's not a five for me because of the writing, which is very good but not my style in parts: (a) Metaphor/analogy/adjective heavy. (b) This sentence made me cringe: "Before the pans had even gone into the oven, something inside of me had already been seared." (c) "Future Perfect" read like a bad high school poem, but that could have been the point. I tend to pa

I am usually not a fan of short-story collections but this volume reminded me why short stories can be such enjoyable reads. Carpenter manages to craft an eclectic mix of writings that vividly bring to life the short but complete story. A couple are very dark and disturbingly real while others evoke a plot from the old Twilight Zone series. The complexity of human relationships is showcased in many of his stories and remarkably analyzed in such a limited space.

I really enjoyed this. These short stories can evoke such strong emotions with so little information. The very first story, "The Tender Knife," made me heartsick.

Might try to publish a review for this one too. Have to write it first. I especially liked "Donny Donny," "The Spirit of the Dog," and "Field Notes.

I write fiction. I also teach it -- mostly at Carleton College, in Northfield, Minnesota.

On my way to academia I staggered through quite a number of bizarre jobs: house painting, uranium mining, factory work, slave labor in a French château, coastline preservation in Brittany, every imaginable aspect of the restaurant industry, small engine repair, small office work, translation, sales and marketi
