779 books175 followers"Captain" Reid wrote many adventure novels akin to those written by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a great admirer of Lord Byron. These novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed settings: the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica.

Itt a Szent Imrében van egy könyvespolc, egész vállalható címekkel, gondoltam, babonából leveszek róla valami limonádét. Reidről már hallottam ezt-azt, a westernponyva specialistája, feltételeztem, nyomasztásban biztosan nem veszi fel a versenyt egy random nefrológiai osztállyal, úgyhogy lelazít picit.
No most: az elején rögtön felbukkan a fej nélküli lovas, de aztán átmegy az egész egy ilyen Texas lovers' romantikus nyenyergésbe, ahol Maurice, a jóképű lovászgyerek és Louise, az ültetvényeslány egymásba szeretnek, előbbi be is tör egy musztángkancát utóbbinak, ami csak akkor lenne nyilvánvalóbb szexuális üzenet, ha előtte még fel is venné a "Veled is ezt fogom tenni, mrrrrrrr" feliratú pólóját. Apunak persze nem esik le, vidoran végignézi az akciót, de a gonosz antagonista megneszeli a dolgot, és vad antagonizálásba kezd. Aminek következtében kiderül, hogy a fej nélküli lovast az elején nem a szarvasok hallucinálták, tényleg van, nem metafora, persze hogy kicsoda is ő és mi a jelentősége, azt majd meglátjuk, mint ahogy azt is, hogy Maurice és Louise végül szerelmesen belelovagolhatnak-é a lemenő napba, hogy onnan egy szekéralja gyerekkel poroszkálhassanak vissza, mert ugye a pionírok szapora népség.
Mit mondjak, nem verdesett miatta egekben a pulzus. Sőt, néha egészségtelenül el is feküdt tőle a kardiogramom - azért a doki ennél izgisebb könyveket szokott javasolni. Sem mint kísértettörténet, sem mint krimi nem egy kimondott karakter - persze mit várjunk, amikor az antagonista a mű felénél bejelenti, hogy bele szokta a golyókba gravírozni a monogramját, így mindig tudni, ő terítette le a vadat. Aztán persze hogyan bizonyítják be, ki a gyilkos? Találjátok ki. Szóval nem Sherlock Holmesoknak való feladat, műkedvelő öreg nutriák és egyéb mocsári miújságok is bízvást megfejthetik. Ami viszont jó benne, az a texasi táj leírása, meg egy-két egész jól megrajzolt figura, az összes csillagot ezek kapják.

На мой взгляд это один из самых лучших приключенческих романов всех времен и народов и определенно самый лучший в жанре "вестерн". Читал его в детстве несколько раз и потом перечитывал уже когда стал постарше. До сих пор помню имена почти всех героев романа.
Интересно, что роман, написанный на английском языке и действие которого происходит в Техасе ( США) мало знаком англоязычной публике. То есть мало кто из британцев или англичан его читал. Как говориться в своем отечестве пророка нет. У нас в России как до революции 1917 года, так и во времена Советского Союза Томас Майн Рид был очень популярен и в особенности этот его роман "Всадник без головы". Не знаю, почему это так, но факт остается фактом.

I read this book about 35 years ago. Yes, it was one of those books that was considered a classic and great reading material in Soviet Union. Every kid must have read it and I was not an exception. While being a timid and not a very tough kid at the time, I took a deep dive into the land of cowboys and Indians, mustangs, wild horses and fighting. Love, of course what boy doesn't want to be cool, tough and in love with a beautiful woman or be loved. That is as much as I can remember, since it was long ago, but how I felt about this book? I couldn't put it down. I was waiting to get to it when I was not home and started to read as soon as I was able to, to find out what's next. Great classic. I loved it and most likely, if I had to read it today, would still do. I know it will stir up some childhood memories that were created in fictional world of this novel. Great read!!

The Headless Horseman - A Strange Tale of Texas by Thomas Mayne Reid (1818 - 1883)
I became aware of this novel in of all places reading the book "The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival" by John Vaillant, and curious (this story has nothing to do with Sleepy Hollow) I downloaded it.
What I downloaded was a free public domain audio version (650.8MB) from LibriVox. The .zip download contained one hundred and one .mp3 modules, one for the prologue and one for each chapter. The chapters are all relatively short, ranging from six to twenty-six minutes, mostly on the low side. An annoyance in this audio version is in the narration, which rendered by volunteers changes voices at many of the chapter breaks. At my age some of these voices were more difficult to understand than others.
According to Wikipedia, the author, Thomas Mayne Reid, fought in the American-Mexican War (1846-1848), and his many works about American life at the time involve the colonial policy in the United States, the horrors of slave labor, and the lives of American Indians. To its credit, this book contains some of the same. Also noted is that this book was the basis of the first Soviet Western movie.
This is of course a Western, and I must confess that I find many Westerns a lark owing to their cultural contrivances. In addition, this story is of the romance ilk with polite hormone induced yearnings, jealousies, and rivalries spurring foul deeds. Proclivities repeated ad infinitum over the ages to the point of stifling my interest.
The style of the writing is resonate of the mid 1800s — when words like intercourse and ejaculation were used in totally different contexts, that relative to speech — and with exaggerated colloquialisms distinguishing characters. Descriptive setting text also runs on a bit for my tastes, causing me in inattention to miss plot points and have to back up occasionally. However, in chapter seven at least there are interesting descriptions of wildlife long gone from the southwestern Texas region, so different strokes for different folks.
On a positive note, the plotting and writing of this story is accomplished and I found it more entertaining than not. Those that have a taste for old style romantic intrigue Westerns with an edge of the macabre may find this book to their liking. Beware the devious man and a woman's wrath, but if you encounter the headless horseman I leave you to conjecture the intent ;-)

I was 13 years old when I read this book for the first time. We were living in Texas and I was homesick for my beautiful motherland. I was invited to visit this girl who was adopted from my home country of Kazakhstan and she gave me a copy of this book in Russian. The book became my solace as I was going through puberty and all the emotions that were boiling inside me from being homesick. I read it cover to cover 10 times.
Now I’m a 30 year old living in NYC finding myself feeling homesick and this book pops up on my “recommended” list. I cried. I went to my Amazon account and immediately ordered a copy. Books are magic. That’s all

1865-1866 m. žurnale spausdintas romanas yra tobulas visų dabartinių meksikietiškų TV serialų scenarijus: dorasis, bet nekilmingas Morisas pamilsta kilmingą gražuolę Luizą, Luiza atsako Morisui tuo pačiu, tačiau Luizą myli ir į ją pretenduoja giminaitis Kolhaunas (kuris yra labai nedoras, bet dar niekas to nežino), be to, Morisą įsimylėjusi meksikietė gražuolė Isidora, kuri dėl Moriso atstūmė Diasą. Pridėkime visuomenės spaudimą: tėvas užstato dvarus, nes organizuodamas puotas iššvaisto turtus, mergina negali susitikinėti su žemesnio luomo vaikinu, jau nekalbant apie tai, kad susitikinėjimas iki vestuvių yra toks nepadorumas, kaip šiais laikais.. (net neįsivaizduoju, kas šiuo metu yra labai nepadoru...). O kur dar detektyvas (žmogžudystė, prarasta atmintis, neteisingi kaltimai ir profesionalo tyrimas) bei indėnai (tiesą pasakius, indėnų tai buvo nedaug – keturi ir tie netikri :( ). Ir 100 (šimtas, Karlai!) skyrių apie visa tai bei laimingą pabaigą. Laimingą laimingą – . O kur dar išmintingas autoriaus žodis, kuris viską paaiškina, kad neduokDie kažką praleisiu ar ne taip suprasiu...
Nepaisant viso to, po 35 metų "Raitelį be galvos" perkaičiau su tokiu pat dideliu malonumu. Ir plačia šypsena: kadangi romanas nėra parodija, todėl belieka tikėti, kad mano susižavėjimas kilo iš Thomas Mayne Reid nuoširdumo ir meistrystės. Arba dėl to, kad meksikietiškos telenovelės vis dėl to daug artimesnės širdžiai nei tą pripažįstu :)

Nepaisant viso to, po 35 metų "Raitelį be galvos" perkaičiau su tokiu pat dideliu malonumu. Ir plačia šypsena: kadangi romanas nėra parodija, todėl belieka tikėti, kad mano susižavėjimas kilo iš Thomas Mayne Reid nuoširdumo ir meistrystės. Arba dėl to, kad meksikietiškos telenovelės vis dėl to daug artimesnės širdžiai nei tą pripažįstu :)

Очень-очень хорошая книжка, но читать ее надо в детстве!!!!!!!!!
В этом году я читал еще одну книгу Thomas Mayne Reid-а - The White Gauntlet, и мои впечатления от чтения обеих историй полностью совпали! Вот они:
"Неплохая книжка, но не для моего возраста: слишком наивно, по-детски ведут себя герои! Плюс с любовью явный перебор, приключений всего лишь процентов 25, все остальное - любовь, ревность, еще раз ревность, очень-очень много любви и, наконец, свадьба (даже две!!!)
Но написано неплохо, хорошим языком (детям для развития речи и словарного запаса самое оно!), есть познавательные исторические сведения, нелепостей и пафоса (как это принято у романтиков) мало, поэтому совсем низкую оценку не поставил!"
Здесь приключений было побольше, чем 25%, но они начались только во второй части книги, а до этого была сплошная любовь, да и свадьба в конце была только одна!!!!

Это такая скучная книга, что мне кажется, что Рида выбрали в СССР, чтобы знакомить советского читателя с американской литературой, потому что его произведение не поднимает никаких ненужных вопросов и рассказывает просто любовную историю про ковбоев и это не «Горбатая гора». Я еле осилил треть и пока не уснул, решил заканчивать с ней.
Больше всего раздражает то, каким простым неинтересным языком написана книга. Например, Хеменигуэй, на мой вкус, пишет сложнее (в хорошем смысле), но тоже не Солженицин. Эрнеста спасают интересные мысли и истории, но предложения сравнительно простые. А этот Майн Рид пишет как плохой сценарист.

The book was certainly what I was not expecting. I was expecting a story filled with horror and scary moments. What I got instead was a more passionate and enchanting story about love and crime.
Even though in the first 100+ pages the headless horseman is barely mentioned by the end the reader will be in awe on how everything turned out. It is truly a turn of events that I enjoyed even though I expected a whole different series of events to unfold before my eyes.

Since I am not a classics reader, agreeing to read this as our next book club read was definitely a challenge to me. I was pretty sure from the start that it wouldn't be for me. Yet, this book honestly surprised me in a good way.
Maybe it were the short chapters that almost always ended in a sort of a cliffhanger, maybe it was the unique writing style that at first I did not enjoyed, but later on come to love, maybe it was the old Texas life with all the wilderness description and free atmosphere, or maybe it was the fact that I read it together with six lovely people that made the experience 100% more enjoyable. I honestly looked forward to reading time every single day.
The story unfolds in 19th century Texas. The wealthy settler Poindexter arrives with his children to start a new life in Texas. Young and beautiful Louise ends up intertwined into a love triangle with wealthy but arrogant and egotistical Cassius Calhoun and attractive and gallant but poor mustanger Maurice Gerald. In the middle of this rivalry, a tragedy strikes - Louise’s brother seems to be murdered - all clues pointing to a mustanger as the culprit. At the same time, a headless horseman appears in the Texas wilderness frightening people with its every appearance. Who is he? Is he real, or is he a ghost? What does he want - justice or revenge?
The start was slow, and I had a very hard time trying to read it in English at first. Mainly because of the Irish accent that got me so confused, I ended up switching to my native language. Luckily, I had an old copy in Russian from my parents, who both enjoyed the book back then.
The book takes a deep dive into the land of cowboys and Indians, mustangs, wild horses, and fighting over women. There are lots of beautiful landscapes and nature descriptions and confusing murder mystery.
The book is a mix of love and crime story - full of adventures that I think both young or old can enjoy. Romance is pretty straightforward and kind of insta-love that I do not enjoy in books, but I guess I can't complain much since it is pretty typical for those times.
The first part of the book is focused more on the romance that didn't interest me much (since I didn't really like Louise), but the second part is where all things finally get interesting - murder, the appearance of a headless horseman, investigation, jealousy and intrigue. The book passed by like watching an interesting movie.
The ending is a culmination of everyone's guesses that shows you the full picture of the true identity of the headless horseman and the murderer. Even though the ending was pretty predictable, I constantly kept guessing and theorizing, which kept me interested until the very end.
Overall, I think this book was a perfect pick to start reading classics. I definitely do not regret this choice!

Visai nesitikėjau laukinių vakarų.

Jau kurį laiką man tęsiasi noras - mačiau filmą, seniai mačiau filmą, o ar yra knyga, jei yra, kodėl iki šiol jos neperskaičiau. Tai labiausiai liečia klasiką (eilėje stovi "Trys muškietininkai", jau nežinau kiek versijų mačiau, bet originalo neskaičiau). Taigi išsikėliau sau tikslą perskaityti tokias knygas ir tarp senų knygų, "Drąsiųjų kelių" serijos, radau šį perlą, kiek pasitrynusį, mačiusi gyvenimo, reikalaujantį remonto (teko suklijuoti, nes viršelis nesiteikė laikytis, vis dėlto tai 1985 m. knyga), bet labai intriguojantį. Pradėjau skaityti ir buvo bam, jokio Depp'o ir jokios senos raganos, gražuolės, kaip ir Christopher Walken - na, iš karto nusivyliau. Bet, negadinkime originalo nusistatymais ir svajonėmis. Sugrįžkime į senuosius Amerikos laikus, kai vyko karai bei paliaubos su indėnais, aplinkui tyvuliavo prerijos, klestėjo plantatoriai, džentelmenai, garbė ir padorumas, kaip ir jausmai. Galima sakyti, jog tai romanas apie meilę, jaunos kreolės, turtingo tėvelio plantatoriaus dukros, bei jauno mustangų gaudytojo airio. Romanas, kai su tavimi kalbasi autorius, pasakoja it koks istorijos mokytojas, supažindina su aplinka, papročiais, tuo meto gyvenimu. Sukuria tyrus jausmus bei būtinai atsiranda blogiukas, įsimylėjęs skrupulų neturintis pošeiva, Luizos pusbrolis. Būtinai atsiras pavojus, neteisingai bus apkaltinas taurus jaunuolis, kaip ir bus užsukta paslaptis apie paslaptingai atsiradusį raitelį be galvos. Nors ir nėra Depp'o bei Walken'o tikrai nenusivyliau, o likau sužavėta atomazga, juk vis spėliojau kas toks raitelis be galvos ir kaip jis įmanomas. Skanu bei apšviečia, tokia jau ta klasika

Man vienmēr licies, ka šī būs padrūma grāmata par tumšajiem viduslaikiem, jo anotācijai biju tikai pavirši uzmetis aci. Nekā nebija. Stāsts risinās saulainajā Teksasā tās sulīgajās prērijās un notikumus diktē karstais meksikāņu temperments.
Pretēji iepriekš lasītajām klasikas grāmatām biju patīkami vīlies, kas negadās bieži.
Nav nekāds spraigais sižets, intriga tiek kāpināta lēni. Tomēr, ja neskaita detalizēti aprakstīto notikumu sīkumus, romāns bija paredzams. Faktiski intriga bija līdz brīdim, kad vienam no varoņiem "nonesa" galvu, jo grāmata taču ir par jātnieku bez galvas :). Šo notikumu sagaidīju tikai, kad 1/3 grāmatas bija izlasīta, bet tas nekas, jo pacietība arī jātrennē :). Nebija nojaušams kuram būs tā "laime" tikt par titulvaroni. Pēc tam intriga pazuda.
Mazliet kaitināja, ka sākumā galvenā varone aprakstīta kā skaistākā sieviete Pasaulē un tas atkārtojas no nodaļas nodaļā. Turklāt vairākās vietās bija aptuveni šāds teksts "viņa ir tik skaista, tik skaista, tas nav aprakstāms uz papīra" - ko tad raksta grāmatu, ja nemāk aprakstīt cilvēku izskatu, vai pieaicināt mākslinieku, kas to uzzīmē? :D Tā jau var visu grāmatu rakstīt "notikumi ir tik interesanti, tik ļoti, ļoti interesanti... ka tos nemaz nevar aprakstīt!" :D
Nesapratu kāpēc ļaunais varonis gribēja iegūt visā šī vārda plašajā nozīmē savu māsīcu!? Vai tad tas nav asinsgrēks!?
Kopumā Likās, ka būs baigā nopietnā klasika, taču izrādijās viegla piedzīvojumu lasāmviela. Varbūt tā arī labāk.

Ну нарешті, і цю читацьку галочку я поставила, а то ж прямо був непорядок якийсь.
Недарма у мене були підозри, що станеться так, як свого часу сталося із Останнім із могікан: читатиму і почуватимусь школяркою-переростком, яку залишили на п'ятий рік у попередньому класі, і вона у 20 читає ті книжки, які в 15 читати годилося б :)
Приблизно так і вийшло, але не настільки страшно. Чи то мені думати не хотілося, але поки автор не написав, то я сама не здогадалася, як же таки з'явився вершник без голови. А загалом, усе просто і зрозуміло, і цікаво. Моя мама такі речі називає "прочотною книжкою" (на відміну від чогось заданого вчителем, бо над ним треба думати), прочитала, потішилася трохи і взяла наступну :)
А, ну і вкотре переконалась, як важливо не додумувати, а колупатися у фактах. І в убивствах, і в коханні, і в будь-чому ще. Фантазія — це, звісно, добре, але її треба тримати в узді. Ясно?
