In a suburb called Success, failure is not an option.
Harry and Louisa look like an ordinary couple. They live in an ordinary house in an ordinary street in a suburb called Success. Harry says it is better to let sleeping dogs lie. But Buster their dog isn’t one for lying still, and even Harry can’t resist digging up the lawnmower he finds buried in the yard. Louisa, too, w

Shelves: australian
This is such a beautiful book, deceptively simple. Lavell captures the inner thoughts and outer actions of an Australian couple as they age and look back on their lives. The emotions in the book rang true to me, as did the language and the everyday experiences.

The main thing that sticks in my mind from this novel is its insight into what can lie beneath the seemingly banal surface of suburban Perth. Most of the story’s foreground action is unspectacular and the characters are (as one of them says) ‘just ordinary people’ – which poses a considerable narrative challenge. But as deep currents swirl under them they thresh around, gasp for breath, and struggle towards something close to redemption.

This is an excellent read; a beautifully written book. Iris's characters are interesting and well drawn. Harry really struck a chord: bumbling, flawed but also genuine, deep and well meaning. Iris is one of the best new authors I've come across in a good long time. I look forward to reading her next book.

I enjoyed this read - especially after going to the book launch and meeting the author. Quite a sad story I suppose but shows the rollercoasters of relationships but how things can fix themselves. Shows how grief and depression can effect people but still has moments of humour and points that make you just smile. Enjoyable.

This is a book where little happens but a lot has happened and Iris unfolds the past in a very delicate way, drawing you in during the first few chapters. Her writing style is lovely yet simple and it makes for a reflective, often frustrating novel.

I received 'Elsewhere in Success' as a Goodreads giveaway. Thoughtful, slow-paced and well-written, it is a story about how ordinary people cope with grief and regret.
