The Purple Heart shows a great respect for the fallen heroes of our country and brings attention to the internment of loyal Japanese Americans during World War II. Although the families of Japanese were confined to what amounted to prison camps inside the US, many young men showed patriotism by volunteering for duty in the US Army and fighting in the 442nd, the most decorated unit in the war with the most Purple Hearts given to any unit.

The Purple Heart is a great love story; it is a story full

The story is kicked off by two grandchildren of Japanese American World War II veterans, both of whom (for different reasons) know little about their family history- or this important moment in American history. Aiko Satoh then begins a journey to uncover who her grandfather was, but as she delves into her family's story, the reader also gets a sense of what the Japanese American community was.

Through memory and memories within memories, we see the journey the original Japanese immigrants made t

Recommends it for: Everyone
THE PURPLE HEART, a historical novel of the Japanese American experience during WWII, has had a profound effect on me. I am a veteran of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and my entire family was uprooted and confined in a relocation camp while I fought for the United States of America. This book has been a remarkable personal awakening.

The barrack life was sobering but since I was only able to visit my parents and sisters in the Rohwer Relocation Camp, I did not fully experience confinement. Wha

The characters are so well-developed that readers can't help but to fall in love and empathize with the experiences they go through. My tipping point in this book was when the love story begins in Chapter 8 - the first time they meet. The love story unfolds like a flower that gets more and more beautiful as it blossoms. I got so caught up in the story that I spent half of my Saturday (7 straight hours) reading from middle to end! I can't remember the last time I did that. I smiled to myself when ...more

Vincent's story is written with a gentle yet raw realism that captured my attention, heart and mind right from the start. As the daughter of a WWI 442nd combat veteran, the battle scenes were particularly gripping in their descriptiveness, action, suspense and realism. I came to appreciate what my Dady endured as he was in many of the same battles described. And, the love story was touching, heart breaking and courageous. A great read; I highly recommend it!
