The IT'S NOT FAIRY flaps round all night, sorting out what's wrong or right . But there's so many kids saying it's not fair — she's ranting and raving and tearing her hair. She's shouting, 'The very next kids I meet, I'm pretty sure I'm going to EAT!'
Billy and Mary say they don't believe in the It's Not Fairy, but that's before she turns up at their house! And it's not only the children she wants to bake into a fairy cake - Mum and Dad come in for their share of blame too. There's nothing for it - the whole family may have to change their ways and be nicer to each other!
This is a wonderful, hilarious fantasy starring a very feisty fairy on a mission, which will have the whole family laughing out loud, as well as encouraging discussion about fairness.
2.5 stars. This book is good for kids who are always complaining about the concept of fairness. (Which is basically all children I've ever met.)
The story is just ok and the text seems to go a rogue at some point - there's the rhyming main story, there's illustrations with words along the sides or in the middle of the picture that distracts from the text, there's a two-page list for the "It's Not Fairy" that interrupts the rhyming main story...Oh, and there's a cake recipe at the end. It felt like someone put together something decent but then kept adding to it and adding to it, and then it got a little messy but it was too late to fix it. I don't love the illustrations.
"It's not fair" is probably the second worst phrase after "I'm bored." In this book two kids are complaining about what is not fair and their parents warn them about the "It's Not Fairy" who listens to all the grievances of children who utter those annoying words. The It's Not Fairy is getting fed up with the complaining and has promised to gobble up the next child that whines those words.
The concept for the book is unique and it could have been fun. However, the dialog, illustrations and weird breakup of the text caused the story note to be executed in a way most children would be able to follow. Sometimes less is more.
I am amused because this is the second mediocre book today that has come up with a reserve from the central library, and I am more than glad to loan these out.
The concept is great at first, but it twists and turns and doesn't really make sense by the middle. The text is AWFUL--attempts at rhymes that don't work, choppy scansion.
From a really gifted picture book writer, this might have been great. But talented as this author is as an artist, as a picture book writer--well, perhaps she needed a collaborator.
I think if I am hit over the head with the "It's Not Fair(y)" message one more time I will scream. And it is in rhyme as to why things aren't fair(y). Yeah, I'm done with this one.
The perfect book for every child who has ever cried, "It's not fair!". This would also be very good for kindergarten through second grade for a little humorous character education.
