I purchased this book in the 1970's in Seattle at the Pike Street Market from Carla Emery. Since then I've purchased it for friends and family. It's a fascinating book with occasional stories, background and instructions of "how tos"... how to make root beer, how to make honey, how to plant corn... on and on it goes. I love the book as a reference and just to scan through for curiosity...

I have the very early home mimeographed version, which I used constantly in the 70's as I raised goats, chickens, and gardened. It is completely apart now and safely and fondly stored in a gift box. I replaced it with the 9th edition for my current gardening library.

This book was on my bookshelf in 1977 and I used it when we were homesteading. I still refer to it when I'm making jam or yogurt or cheese . . . it has a bit of everything in it.
