The budgeting worksheets in the first part of the book were helpful for me, but the rest of the book was not. There is a lot of obvious advice that I was already doing or stuff like "stop spending money on X, Y, and Z" that wasn't relevant because I never had the money to spend on those extra things anyway. It also introduced ideas like cooking at home instead of eating out or taking the bus like they were novel concepts. Sigh.

The market knowledge felt pretty dated, and really the book as a whole is only relevant to certain people with certain lifestyles (aka have career job, then get married, then have baby, then buy house).

I think this would be a decent beginning budget book for someone who has money but doesn't know how to stop spending/look ahead to the future. I wish that was my situation! For people like me, though, we'll keep looking for a better match. (At least I can enjoy the fact that I borrowed this from the library for free-- and no late fee charges.)

This book highlights the importance of having a budget, managing expenses, and paying off debt (personal and mortgage loans) as early as possible in order to improve your financial life. It presents simple rules that, if followed by motivated people, can help achieving financial freedom.

However, I would recommend reading Dave Ramsey's books about this topic if you do not have too much time on hand.

A book on common and yet comprehensive study on budgeting. It offers structure, tables and formulas for those new to budgeting and getting your finances in order. To those who have been practicing these disciplines, most are common knowledge that serves more of a reminder. You might probably a nudget or 2 of wisdom in this book.

This has really good advice and started me on the path to budgeting years ago, thank GOD, because starting that habit earlier rather than later has been crucial

But I'm just never going to actually finish this book as I would a novel. It's a reference that I pick up when I'm stressing about money and want to feel productive or like I'm in control of my destiny or whatever

It was an okay book with some common budgetting concerns and a few quotable parts. Otherwise though it didn't really help with the big things. Like it didn't talk about cost benefit analysis, and just presumed that college was a worthwhile investment, even though for most people it's a liability with no benefit whatsoever.
Anyhow, it may help some Joe average Americans.
