On that first Christmas night, the earth bursts with praise at the Savior's birth. Donkeys bray, sheep bleat, horses neigh, and shepherds come from nearby fields -- but Mary simply wants to be alone with her sweet babe.

When quiet finally falls, Mary cradles her son and sings her mother-song, leaving readers dreaming of that silent night so long ago.

Noises didn't bother my babe.
They did me.
I longed to be alone with him.

There's an opening illustration that depicts Mary playfully lifting the baby, Jesus, in the air. Both are smiling and engaged in a playful act. But the halos are still present. And within the happiness, we are reminded of the holiness.

But there is more to Mary's Song than what we might expect. We know this story, right? Lee Bennett Hopkins and Stephen Alcorn adjust the lens so we can get even further into the manger, to see

In this children's poetry book, Lee Bennett Hopkins does a wonderful job telling the story of Mary and baby Jesus from Mary's perspective. The poetry in this story helps the reader experience what Mary's thoughts may have been during her time with her baby; Jesus. Not only does the poetry help readers experience this, but the illustrations which were done by mixed-media on ivory paper bring life to the words in the book. The colors and details of the illustrations help to depict the joy Mary mus ...more

This story is about Mary on Christmas morning. When Jesus is born Mary longs for silent time with her baby, but the stable is very noisy. There are oxen, shepherds, and lots of other noises in the stable. Throughout the book all Mary wants is to be alone with her baby away from all of it. This book would be wonderful for talking about Eucharistic adoration to young students. Many Catholic grade schools have students go to Eucharistic adoration on First Fridays as part of the traditional devotion ...more

This is a story of the Christ child’s birth from Mary’s perspective. It is beautifully illustrated with large pictures and it is a new and different take on the story of the divine birth. There is some rhyme, but the text is basic and the story is clear. Great for children who are learning this story from many different angles.

A quiet, peaceful Christmas story with beautiful illustrations. I've never seen this particular style before, but think it complements the text extremely well.
