Do you long for something more in your relationship with God? Are you struggling to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit? Are you ready to embark on a Spirit-propelled adventure of restoration, renewal and transformation? When we do not experience God s life within us, our Christianity can deteriorate into a lifeless system of rules and empty rituals. If this describes you at the moment, know that you are not alone. Many spiritual seekers are tired of a superficial faith and yearn to know the fi re of God s presence burning in their hearts. In Holy Spirit Here and Now Trevor Hudson shares his personal journey and offers practical guidance to help you experience the Holy Spirit moving in your ordinary life. Some of the common hurdles he addresses are: Feeling that the Holy Spirit is only available to religious professionals, but not to you Being put off by negative past experiences with people attempting to push you into an experience of the Holy Spirit Having a sense that something is lacking in your relationship with God Feeling that experiences of God s Spirit are far removed from our everyday lives Believing that experiencing the Holy Spirit is a once-off event rather than a lifetime journey. Trevor Hudson encourages you to allow every part of your life your emotions, body, soul, relationships, career to become an arena where the Holy Spirit can work. This is what it means to be truly fi lled with God s Spirit."
This is my second time reading Hudson's book, this second time with a small group discussing it through the 2022 year. I liked it fine the first time through, but I like it more this year, probably because I'm discussing it a chapter each month with friends and because my life is quite different from 2016. I'm sure I thought I knew a lot more about a lot of things in 2016; now, I think I have a lot to learn.
I had just returned physically from the desert when I led chapter 8 "The Holy Spirit Leads Us Into the Desert". Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 ("Suffering") fit my 2017 onward life so it meant more to me. Hudson (it sounds strange to call Trevor Hudson by his last name since Trevor was one of my Renovare Institute teachers -- taking Dallas Willard's place after Dallas died), at any rate, Trevor writes the way he teaches: with gentleness and kindness. He makes sense. This isn't going to be 'Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire' (and I liked that book too). This is more Holy Spirit whispering, wooing.
If you've read many books on the Holy Spirit, maybe this would feel like nothing new, but I like how individuals take "nothing new" and give their own voice to it, their own life experiences. Then, I see what the Holy Spirit is making "new" in my life through interactions with their words and experiences or reawakening something old.
I still believe the miraculous gifts given to the Apostles ceased, upon their passing and the author does not. But, Hudson's work gives a balance of experience of the Holy Scripture and scripture, I have not encountered before.
I enjoyed this study of the Holy Spirit. Trevor Hudson writes in an easy to read and easy to understand style. I appreciate that each chapter has a real world example of how to include a new practice in my life. It was an enjoyable study. I wish there was a video to accompany the book.
A readable, relatable book on a subject which has mystified me for years. I like the author's admission that he, too, is a believer AND struggler in faith. He does not take a know-it approach to the existence of the Holy Spirit but presents ideas as both plausible and worthy of serious reflection.
