Aided by his half English step-brother Moses, a weathered Polaroid photograph, and a completely fictitious document, Alex Sorros embarks on a quest to find the elusive Annabelle Hipster. One part amateur detective noir, one part strangle-your-family drama, Breaking Bones is a story of drinking too much, thinking too much, and more or less failing at life. Alex was an under ...more

*NOTE: I would like to make it clear that I use the goodreads suggested rating in which 3 stars don't mean mediocre. It means that I liked it. I didn't "REALLY like it", but it was more than "ok"

I did like this book, but there were parts that stopped me from loving it.

I sure don't like the main guy, Alex. He is a vegan hater (not the major element of the character), kind of a guy that I consider a douchebag. This in no way stopped me from enjoying the book. Sometimes books are great

What did I think of my own book?
Well...
Breaking Bones is about judging books by the their cover, and not feeling bad about it all. It's about drinking too much, waking up with a hangover, but still spending the afternoon with your grandmother. Breaking Bones is a story about how you can still do good things even if you're a bad person.

Filled with humor from the wry end of the spectrum to the absurd, Breaking Bones is a funny book. I might describe it as a coming of age novel without the coming of age. I also found it tinged with a feeling of nostalgia from the early 2000s, but I might be projecting. Anyway, if you are looking for a pleasant read or a chuckle, check it out.

I was really impressed with this first novel. I agree with the author's mother's comment to me that the book gets better as it goes. But it did make me laugh 3 times within the first 10 pages or so, so it's pretty good from the start too. The book was written over 4 years, and you can see a lot of growth and improvement in writing (particularly dialogue in my opinion) from start to finish. I enjoyed the characters, found them refreshingly multi-dimensional, and I loved the short stories sprinkle ...more

***I won this book through a Goodreads' giveaway***

My rating is really 3.5 stars. The book is funny, entertaining and nicely written. I also thought that it got better as it went along; almost like the beginning was written and then the book was finished at a later date. I liked the idea of small stories within a larger novel, but at times it was a little confusing. I wasn't entirely sure there was going to be an actual plot when I first started reading, but when it kicked in it did

Breaking Bones... is a refreshing, laugh-out-loud multiplex of narratives that have you wanting to kick and console the characters simultaneously. The premise of the novel--a search for a real girl through generally fictitious means--along with the relationships between the main character and those around him (even the really minor minor characters are interesting and intriguing) are both careful and irreverent. A great first novel and a very fun read.
