Romancing the Dog: The Struggle to Make a Pound Dog Happy in Beverly Hills

Author Marion Zola (All the Good Ones are Married) lovingly depicts how she and her husband adopted “Chips” from a local rescue group – and got a little more than they bargained for when they brought him home to Beverly Hills!

Chips manages to single-handedly supply all the drama, happiness, worry and guilt of a handful of children. And, like all pets, he enlarges and enriches their lives in ways they never expected – bringing new friends into it and teaching them lessons about the special bond between people and their animal companions.

“Anyone who loves dogs will find this journey
moving and funny and well worth taking. You won’t want it to end.” Warren Eckstein, Host of the nationally syndicated “The Pet Show” and author of “How to Get Your Dog to do What you Want”.

I think this couple had the means and the time to make their pound puppy Chips very happy indeed. Then again, most childless couples do tend to treat their pets very well. I've seen it in my own family and I do it myself!

The difference here was they had more money and more time than the average dog owner. Otherwise there was nothing spectacular about the story, this couple just loved their dog so much they wrote a book about him. Sweet story.

Whether you are well to do in Beverly Hills or in rural Georgia, the boundless love and dedication of this couple for their fur-child relates to all pet lovers. I cried at the end knowing how hard it is to finally say good-bye.

A Lifetime Remembered!
Anyone who has been a loving caregiver to a pet dog will devour this beautiful memoir of a relationship which is totally trusting, faithful and full of the sad as well as the happy moment which such a bonding brings one.
Marion Zola writes as if she is speaking to you, telling you about her pet, Chips. She lays it out, the good and the bad, the funny and the sad, so well that I began to feel as if I knew this little family personally.
Lillian Yves and Vincent Lee Grayson have definitely helped bring this biographical story back to life with their narration which was a pleasure to listen to.
I would recommend this book/audiobook to anyone who loves animals, especially dogs, as it is written with 'heart'!
My review is written after listening to the audiobook and it is given voluntarily.

A Love Story

This is a straight-forward tale about a rescue dog that was adopted and grew up in Beverly Hills. The story is not so different from anyone who has had the love of a dog in their lives. It is a pleasant reminder of all the things we do for our loyal friends. It spans his lifetime and is a wonderful memoir of his time with Marian and Sam. I picked this up because the narrators were known to me because of the historical fiction genre I typically read. This was a refreshing change. It made me look back fondly on the memory of my two dogs who have found a place in my heart and this heartfelt story was completely relatable.

This wonderful story recounts a childless Beverley Hills couple's life with a precocious, energetic and thoroughly indulged rescue dog. It is, by starts, funny, thought provoking and tragically sad - all the things any dog lover can relate to.
I loved Romancing the Dog, in part, because like so many other dog owners, I've lived it.
If you've ever had, and lost, a beloved dog, I think you will too.

I rarely give a book 5 stars, but this book earned each & every star. First of all, the writing was excellent. Secondly, the story was sweet & funny. Does the writer display a little neurotic behavior to make her pup happy? Yes. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with erring on the side of love and comfort, as far as I am concerned. Frankly, I think the world would be a better place if everyone had a dog to love & who loved them back with such unwavering devotion.

I enjoyed reading this story. Growing up with a Bichon, I related to another furry friend with his two loving parents he had wrapped around his paw. A little long but worth every page. Full of laughs and some tears. Must read.
