The man is obviously a genius. Let's just leave it at that.

Reading Heidegger for the first time was a tough exercise, yet a good one. The book deals with a very tight space of meaning, by expanding the significations and seeking new ones by metaphors then word appending.
Heidegger separate the thingy part of the work of art by defining its three faces (the thing as a mere thing, the thing as a tool, the thing as a stuff).
Then, he defines the base from which a work of art reveals itself, using the metaphor (or maybe not) of the earth and the world. The s ...more

Ein-Satz-Review

Excellent essay, though difficult. If I remember correctly, it discusses how art and artist create each other simultaneously, essentially. (Simplified version.)
I think it's generally good to know what you're getting into before reading a difficult piece like this, and many years later, that's what I've retained from this particular essay.
From wikipedia, but here's a better articulation of this point, the one I found most interesting:

Newcomers to Heidegger's tought could see this essay way to shisofrenic from part to part, and certanlly it wouldn't be wise for them to start studyng Heidegger with "The Origin of the Work of Art" (although it fragmentally reflects the whole of his thinking). Despite the entangled language, content presented here offer numerous epochal insights. Certanly, I will need to read it several more times (with some assistance) in order to get it better. Anyhow, Heidegger's effort is to think the essenc

I read this book in french and it worked greatly as a sleeping aid. For several days I tried to cope with intertwined abstract ideas on the origin of art, artworks and their place within the art world. Pure boredom, I am so deceived.

The essay is short, but extremely far reaching. Meditation on the origin of work of art offers not only deep insight into the nature of the mystery of art, but it becomes occasion to question basic concepts of our western thinking tradition which Heidegger finds inadequate for the problem in hand. He labours hard to find his way in dense sentences full of neologisms, so that one must often ask in his own words: “Is it only something remarkable, or indeed only the empty sharpness of a conceptual

Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) was a German philosopher whose work is perhaps most readily associated with phenomenology and existentialism, although his thinking should be identified as part of such philosophical movements only with extreme care and qualification. His ideas have exerted a seminal influence on the development of contemporary European philosophy. They have also had an impact far beyo
