Hayle Coven #8

The Enforcers Cometh

The moment my hand touched the handle, I felt Quaid enter the back yard, just like always. But if it wasn’t him on the other side of the kitchen door, who was? I pulled it open on reflex, still smiling, to find three black robed Enforcers looming in the darkness.

They didn’t wait for me to stand aside but muscled their way in. The leader, a woman with familiar features if not a face I knew personally, took a stand in the middle of the kitchen, body shimmering with blue power as the wards of the house tried to repel her.

“We’ve come for Miriam Hayle,” she said. “Your leader is under arrest.”

Syd’s life is finally settled. She’s even going on her first date with Quaid. That calm is shattered when a group of High Council Enforcers arrive and arrest her mother on countless charges. Desperate to defend Miriam, Syd calls on all of her family’s allies, even seeking out those she should probably leave in peace. Certain the Dumonts are behind the whole thing, Syd is shocked to discover there is much more to this attack on her coven, an attack led by an old enemy who holds Miriam’s life in her hands.

I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.

Naw. I like being a nerdy girl :)

Wow, this just keeps getting better! Again Patti Larsen succeeded in writing an utterly unique and completely captivating story about mostly the same characters in the same setting. At last Syd is getting ready for her very first date with Quaid, when, in walk the enforcers to arrest her mother, Miriam Hayle for crimes committed against the High Council. Before the trial and during breaks in the trial, Syd has to collect evidence and witnesses to prove her mother's innocence. Guided by grandmother Ethpeal Hayle, she gathers vampires, demons and even the dead to testify. John Grisham's thrilling court room dramas look somewhat mundane compared to this suspenseful supernatural court case. To complicate things, Syd has to step up as coven leader as well as find her mysteriously vanished best friend. Fortunately Sassafras, the silver Persian cat, has his paw and his opinion ready to support and assist.

Once again in this book I could see how skillfully the author allows her characters and their relationships with one another to grow and develop. Syd, the main character, has to deal with the kind of problems teenagers all over the world face on a day to day basis. Relationship changes, changes in the home, and the devastating reality of a troubled friend who is on the brink of self-destruction are just some of the things she has to cope with while trying to focus on getting her mother through the trial alive and with her powers intact.

The book zooms into edge-of-your-chair action from the very start and does not slow down until the end. As is usually the case with the Hayle Coven novels, I simply could not put the book down as the incredible suspense held me spellbound. The title of the book, Full Circle, is also indicative of the fact that several old enemies reappear to, once again, take their shots at the Hayle Coven and its leader.

I definitely recommend this book as an absolute must-read but make sure to get the first seven books in the series before you read this one. Thumbs up and a loud cheer along with five well deserved stars for Full Circle and a wonderful author! (Ellen Fritz)

I really don't know what it is about these books but I feel compelled to read them. Don't get me wrong I am not YA at all but in my forties and my tastes vary a lot. This series is so entertaining, a light fun read with a touch of romance and no swearing, extreme violence or sex scenes. It takes me back to a time of innocence growing up where I was reading books purely on their ability to keep me turning the pages. Syd is a great character with three individual personalities and power in one body, the witch, the demon and the Sidhe princess. She defends her family from the evil that tries to take over their coven. Quaid is back at her side and now her mother has been arrested and is on trial for blood magic. Syd has to step up and take the reins whilst scrambling to form a defence to save her mother. Not known for her tact and planning, Syd must do it right this time as her mother's life is at stake. The evil Batsheva is back, gotta love that name and she is now head of the Witch Council determined to gain control and kill Miriam. Syd has to work together with her grandmother before its too late and enlist the help of the vampires and werewolves to prove her mother's innocence. Celeste is still a thorn in their side and Odette is in the background waiting to seek revenge against the Hayle Coven. What will it take to save the day and does Syd have it in her to prove to the Coven and everyone else that she is worthy of leading the coven.

I saw Ms. Larsen's first book Family Magic on BookBub.com and thought it sounded interesting, a which demon gal, different. That hooked me to buy the first story in the 20 book series. The writing and characters kept me hooked through the remaining 19 books. I rarely will buy Ebooks when they're $5.99 ... after Family Magic I didn't blink, just bought the next one and downloaded. I just had to see what was going to happen next. I really got invested in the story line, wanting to know what twists and turns would happen next. I don't know how many times I burst out laughing or cried my eyes out as the story unfolded (make sure you have a box of tissues for the last couple books you'll need them), or how often I didn't want to put the book down (but had to because my lunch hour was over) The characters were believable ... some you fell in love with, others you loved to hate. Anything I write about the story will give away what happens, but so you have to read them and see what happened. You won't be sorry you picked them up. I just wish there was more after book story, but there are more in the Hayle Coven universe. I read the books one after another, so this is the same review for all of them.

I'm 50 and enjoy young adult books because the lack of sex scenes in them You get to know the characters more in them. Although Syd does have sex in some of them, there is no description of it, just mentioned that she did have it and maybe waking up with her boyfriend. My niece is 14 and I'd give them to her to read.

This book is one of my favorites in the series so far. Syd really shows her strength not only to the reader, but the entire Council of Witches. Her mother, Miriam, is arrested for absurd charges and Syd is thrown into leading her coven while the trial goes on. It’s heartbreaking to see Syd have to take the reins from her mother, reluctant as all heck. But, when Erica, her mother’s second in command, and of course the malicious Celeste try to take over the power, she shows them a thing or two. She can do this. Syd has to.

It made me mad to discover just why the Council had been ignoring the Hayle Coven’s requests for help in the past for so long. An old enemy now sits as Head council and is determined to bring Miriam down. But Syd won’t be taking this sitting down. Along with her crazy Gram, who is still hiding but hanging out in Syd’s head, Syd puts on her best Coven Leader attitude and decides to show them all she’s got and save her mother.

I loved how Syd really stood her ground in this one. Even through threats on her life, threats on her coven and facing the last person on earth she’d ever want to see again, she perseveres. That’s just Syd. She gets a crap load of issues to deal with from enemy coven leaders, to finding friendship amongst the leaders too. Who can she trust? What if she loses in the end? Oh the tragedy of it all! The storytelling is only getting better and more intense. It leaves this reader digging my nails into the chair and grinding my teeth.

Syd is still trying for normal, but at least she's not fighting her magical self anymore. One of the things I love about this series is how much Syd grows and develops as a character. And not just her, but her mom, grandmother, sister, uncle, even the cat all have profound characters arcs that make them so real and engaging. In this book, Syd's finally going to get her first date with dreamboat Quaid, when of course the magical world bursts in to spoil it, by arresting her mother.

Now Syd has to step up her game to save her mother and her coven. I'm so proud of Syd in this book. She really grew up here and learned how to take the lead, and with her grandmother's fun banter and insane cackles, it just made Full Circle a joy to read. I couldn't put it down even though I was on a big deadline and really should have been working! It was too addictive. Full of touching moments, humor, unexpected twists and so much more, I can't speak more highly of this book or this series. Keep writing them, Patti Larsen, because we're all ready for the next one!

Sigh

Could a book get any better? A thrilling installment to an amazing series where we see Syd take over the coven again when her mother is arrested. Things will be revealed. Covens tested. Another epic book in a great series!

I really liked this book. The plot is beginning to reveal itself, and proves to be a little more mature than expected. I'm very interested to see what happens with Alison, and I think the books will just get better from here.

I actually really liked this one. Not that I thought that I would hate it or something, but I really enjoyed it. The intrigue of inter-coven dealings and Syd and her Grandmother planning stuff was fun. I especially enjoyed how Syd dressed like her mom. Don't get me wrong, she should still try and develop her own style of leadership, like Gram said, but it was fun to read about how kickass she was and how everyone thought she was her mom for a second. I'm sad Alison is dead, and she'll cause problems in the future. I'm not trying to be an awful person, but I can't blame Syd for dealing with what she can handle, and Alison wasn't on that list. So while I wish they could have reconnected, Alison was kind of going downhill. I enjoyed Syd's kickassyness, and also SINCE WHEN WAS HER DAD THE DEMON PRINCE?! And, what will happen with the vampire virus? All these questions...
