I read this book in conjunction with my Introduction to GIS class. We ran version 10.4 at school and I ran version 10.5 at home. Even so, the 10.1 tutorial was extremely helpful. Very little was different and what was different was fairly easy to figure out how and why it had changed. I really appreciated the step by step guide before each "Your Turn" exercise. The guides helped me to understand what I was doing, and the exercises really reinforced that information. I highly recommend this to anyone starting out with GIS.

Used this book for my GIS class. Unfortunately, all of the tutorial assignments are posted online. Students are able to get the information to turn in and complete assignments with the exception of 3 of them. I was very disappointed when I found this out. Prior to this I thought the book was perfect for my class. I teach at a college in the Pittsburgh area and since the book was published from authors from CMU a lot of the data was from the Pittsburgh area. Since the data from was Pittsburgh, I felt the students would have more of a connection to the material. However, I would not recommend using this book to anyone since all of assignment answers are posted on Youtube for the students to submit their homework.
