I view these as cosy sagas, in book form and what’s particularly charming about this series is that it doesn’t have or need any of the salacious (often exaggerated) story-lines typically attributed to a soap opera. Except for the murder in Book 5, the drama is gentle, inoffensive and village-centric. We get to learn what’s going on in and around the local store, the gift shop, the pub, the farm, the church/manse and Linn Hall. Delving into the chapters is like a long-awaited phone catch-up with ...more

In this sixth novel in the series, the reader is transported back to the tiny town of Prior's Ford to share in the everyday lives of its inhabitants. The Ralston-Kerrs have been successful in transforming the overgrown gardens of their old estate, Linn Hall, back to its former glory, but should they renovate their home and other buildings to bring even more visitors and income? While the changes to Tarbethill Farm are positive, Ewan cannot forget the past and Alison's role in the plans. Will he ...more

I love this series even though I've only read #5 & 6, and in reverse order at that! Actually I had to wait till now to finish #6 since it was a library download and had to be returned for another person on the waiting list to finish it first. Anyway I love the characters and plan to go back to the beginning (the first 4 were written under a pseudonym, Eve Houston). There really isn't any mystery involved in either #5 or #6 other than to see what happens next in the lives of these very intere ...more

I chose this book as my "Read a book people would be surprised to see you reading" category for my own made-up 2016 Reading Challenge. Why? Well, it's basically a daytime soap opera set to words, and pretty much everyone knows how much I detest soap operas! Yet I am enthralled with this series set in the fictional Scottish village of Prior's Ford, with its spectrum of people--some nice, some not so much--the entangled relationships, the comings and goings of the regulars, the machinations and ma ...more

It's not the fault of this book that my local library classified it as a mystery. There's not much mysterious about it, but we watch several recalcitrant couples get together (at last--this is the second Prior's Ford book I've read, and both romances date back at least to the previous book), and watch a few marriages improve. There's also an unorthodox reunion and a writer with a secret, but it's all very gentle and undramatic. This reminds me of the Miss Read books, but set in Scotland.

I thought this was supposed to be a mystery, and kept waiting for someone to be murdered, but it was a tale about the tiny village of Prior's Ford, and the people who lived there and needed a lot of help with their relationships. I didn't find it charming or amusing, and skipped a lot of it, still hoping for a murder to liven things up.

Intesting tale of small village folk & restored gardens & homes. Large list of characters, confusing at first but you get to know them and their problems and pleasures. A place you'd like to visit. Not a who-dun it. More of a will they finally get married? A mother you'd hate with a daughter you'd love.

This book was catalogued as a mystery, the only mystery involved is why was it catalogued as a mystery!! Debbie Macomber reincarnates in Scotland!! But I like Evelyn Hood's writing better especially with her garden descriptions. This book is a delightful and a gentle read in a stressed filled time. I liked the characters, the stories and I throughly enjoyed reading this book.
