Simple book with simple story for emerging preschool readers as a parental read-aloud, or for newly independent readers. Good message on telling the truth. The illustration depicts a brown ethnic family with characters that look like our family. :) This doesn't impact the story but worth noting if your looking for "visual diversity" in your kids library.

My local library just purchased and stocked this book collection in late 2013 per the date stamp on the opening page. Nice find. I didn't know

Um... this book is OK. The story is fine. The lesson is fine, if a bit heavy-handed. Occasionally the illustrations are very good, occasionally they are kind of weird, and most of the time they are just OK.
Beyond the Pages

The Missing Cupcake Mystery was such a wonderful book with a great lesson on the importance of honesty and telling the truth. I loved the real life simplicity of the dilemma. I also loved seeing the positive parental response, which truly addressed the problem, without belittling or devaluing the child.

This message would be a good lesson for any type of family, African-American or otherwise. It would provide an excellent basis for a home study or Bible study lesson on living with integrity.

I ho
This is another fun book with a lesson that features an African American family written by Tony and Lauren Dungy. I gave this book 5/5 stars and cannot say enough about how great this story is. It is a simple story with a great lesson but written so a child could enjoy the story without being preached to. I liked the illustrations and thought they added to the story making it more believable. I think all children should read this book!
