A truly wondrous non-fiction picture book. The illustrations are so good, most could be mistaken for photographs. The facts about each ocean animal are concise & appropriate for the target age range. And the concept - to show on each two-page spread of this oversized book the real size of the animal (or body part thereof) - is clever and fascinating. Highly recommended!

Twin Text: Curious George Discovers the Ocean by Bethany Freitas (2015)

Rationale: “Curious George Discovers the Ocean” is the fiction book that supports “Lifesize Ocean” because it uses real pictures of the ocean to support kindergarten students. It takes the loads of information available in the older student text “Lifesize Ocean” and pinpoints just a few of the cool and interesting facts. It helps students narrow down the mass of information related to the ocean and

Ever wonder how big a sea turtle would look swimming past you? Or a blue whale? This book offers you a glimpse at a range of sea animals. Each page is a peek at one animal. Lurking anglerfish, spiked porcupine fish, enormous purple-striped jellyfish, and more swim across the page with lifelike clarity. The text on these main pages is brief, but the back offers more information on each animal. The knowledge included is introductory, but enough to stimulate curiosity and the photography is stunnin ...more

Ocean animals under threat are the focus of this book which features unique perspectives and close-ups of creatures both known and unknown to readers. A brief paragraph on each spread gives readers enough information to entice them to want to learn more.

Animal facts and a page about saving ocean animals round out the back matter. Recommended for PreK-2+.

I realized that the scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp and I have very different ideas on what's palatable and where to dine! The photographs are gorgeous and the information is just right for a third grade read aloud.

Told through photography. I loved the "natural state" of the animals, but felt that more descriptions could be given for both them and their environments. Be sure not to miss the "appendixes" at the end...there is critical information in them, including their endangered status and how to help.

Fabulous illustrations, fascinating vocabulary, and thoughtful text organization, from some of the smallest sea creatures (copepods) to the largest (whales). Students loved, we're clamoring to check out!

Gorgeous photos in this book! They were so beautiful that they detracted from what was written. My son didn't want to have the book read to him. He would much rather just look at the pictures.

This will appeal to kids who are really interested in marine life. The illustrations are interesting and full of life, but the text lacks punch. I found myself skimming pages toward the end.
