Maddie is a sweet-tempered coonhound who accompanied her owner, Theron, on a yearlong, cross-country trip while he worked on a photojournalism project. In his spare time, Theron took photos of Maddie doing what she does best: standing on things. From bicycles to giant watermelons to horses to people, there really isn't anything that Maddie won't stand on with grace and pat ...more

i know. i'm a soft touch. you make a book with photos of animals being cute or being gross or being silly and i will buy it. it's not something i have any control over - it's just the way it is. and this book is so freaking amazing - maddie gets into and onto everything. HOW IS THIS DOG EVEN POSSIBLE???

here are a bunch of pictures i grabbed from her site:

and then there will be some pictures i got from the book itself. but y

I love This Wild Idea. It is the only reason I joined Instagram and to date remains the only thing I view or do on Instagram. I love this guy's story; I love his sense of adventure; I love his willingness to quit a job he felt wasn't feeding his soul; I love his dog rescue story; I love that he traveled cross country for a year. I'm an Aries. That actually sounds good to me.

The compilation that is Maddie on Things is, overall, endearing. I love that Maddie is a rescue from a shelter and that she is clearly loved by Mr. Humphrey. The concept is also entertaining. I did enjoy the pictures, the way in which they were framed and the saturation levels were pleasing to my eye. I found myself enjoying the backgrounds of the photos more than the focus or the items Maddie was on. When it came to the items Maddie would stand on I was a bit bothered. Many of them were interes ...more

Maddie the Coonhound (Video)

I just ordered this book, but I could theoretically already rate it in advance (something I don't do as a principle, though) because all the photos are available on the website linked above.
I'm in love. Maddie's patience and balance are extraordinary, especially for a shelter dog. The ideas behind the images are weird, funny, outright crazy or simply adorable.

Now I have to wait a week or two until I can cuddle up on my sofa and enjoy doggish awesomeness without th

I absolutely adore Maddie.

This is actually a photography book*, and not literature. However, stories have different ways of being told and these pictures still tell you so much about the relationship between Maddie and her owner.

Maddie is a coonhound dog that was rescued from an animal shelter by the photographer, Theron Humphrey. What he didn't know and found out later, was the fact that Maddie could perform an unusual trick. She basically has incredible balance (and patience, I imagine) and w

For all you instagrammers, here is a book by two of the most popular Instagrammers out there: Theron & Maddie from @thiswildidea

How can you not love Maddie? She's the epitome of the patient, willing, loyal canine friend. She is the companion that we all want to have, and together she and Theron make the American road trip that we all want to have.

There is not a lot of text in this book, so it probably functions best as a coffee table book after first read. But one I think your guests will enjoy

This is a book of photographs taken by Humphrey on his 65,000 mile cross-country journey with Maddie, a rescued coonhound with a talent for balancing on just about any surface. The photographs are beautiful and Maddie is a beautiful dog but what really got me was the way the book has captured the essence of why we "journey" and how it transforms us for the better. The author is currently (as of May, 2013) on a book tour and he is charming.

I was pretty worried about Maddie in a few of these pictures. Even when Humphrey assures us of her safety - for some of them, at least. I'd love to see the process of taking these pictures - how incredibly still and calm she must have to stay while the shot is being taken.

Love the idea, love the photographs, love Maddie.

Loved this book of photos of his dog on a journey they took around the country. Not sure how he got Maddie to pose like that!

I didn’t love this as much as I thought I would. Maddie is clearly a very talented and chill dog, and she loves her human very much, so much so that she’s willing to be in very precarious and uncomfortable positions for him. Some photos are very cute and/or funny, like Maddie standing on a horse’s back, or Maddie standing in front of a “No Standing” sign. But others are so precarious that I worried for her (ex:stretched between two shopping carts, or balanced on a bridge railing). In some photos ...more

Add me to the list of people who were fortunate to meet Maddie and Theron Humphrey. Maddie carries herself with the grace she exhibits in the photographs, and is a happy and contented dog. She's logged mile after mile after mile, and is the center of attention in rural, lonesome spaces. This is a wonderful book - its rather washed-out photos ring true, whereas richly saturated colors would diminish Maddie. She definitely stands out and owns the photographs, which is truly remarkable. I bought a ...more

This is a beautiful photo book. There are photos of Maddie the dog standing on all different things. It's a unique and entertaining idea for a book. Maddie and her owner travel all over the country to meet new and interesting people while shooting their photos.
The photos are bright and interesting. They often get you thinking of how they could possibly be set up to work. It's a very fun book.
This is a wonderful picture book. Maddie is a gorgeous dog and her owner, Theron Humphrey, has taken some wonderful pictures of her in this fun, at times hilarious, book. All dog lovers will have fun spending a few hours looking at these pictures.

Oh my goodness, this book made me smile, Maddie is the best. I can hardly get my little doggie to sit quiet long enough for a regular photo, just him sitting on the floor, and this dog sits, lays and stands on all kind of things, all with pure patience and grace. Cars, fence posts, fire hydrants, streets signs and many more obscure objects you wouldn't believe any dog could ever stand on, let aside holding still long enough for a great shot. Sometimes I don't even get how he managed to get the d ...more

I loved this book so much! This is a collection of photographs of a dog posed in quirky and remarkable ways. The only real reading material is the introduction, written by the photographer, Theron, buts it's written quite well and is very enjoyable to read. If he ever writes at greater length I'd be eager to read it. While Maddie's ability to balance and willingness to "stay" on pretty much anything is amazing the best thing is how she looks so amused in most of the shots, like she understands t ...more

I checked this book out, read it in one gulp and promptly returned it so others can enjoy it. It's not a tough read; it's mostly a picture book. Maddie balanced on a dinosaur Pee-Wee Herman style, Maddie in the wheel well of heavy equipment, Maddie in a mailbox. Maddie is a great dog. I wish there was a little more story given about each picture if only to prolong the reading of the book. In the prolog which I normally don't read but did this time just to have something to read, the author descr ...more

If you're a dog owner, you've no doubt taken pictures of your dog. With the ubiquity of camera phones, dog pictures are everywhere. However, Humphrey takes taking dog pix to a new level with the aid of his lovable and seemingly long suffering companion Maddie, a rescued coonhound, who winds up posing all over the USA. Generally she's standing balanced on things you wouldn't expect a dog to be able to balance on - a birdhouse roof, fence posts, refrigerator doors, a dinosaur or a tortoise. Someti ...more

Everyday and often not pretty objects and surroundings are transformed into so much more when a dog as lovely as Maddie poses on them. It is a amazing what this dog will stand on, though I suppose some credit must go to Theron Humphrey for coaxing and rewarding her for her efforts! A trip worth doing is worth remembering, and we all benefit from Mr. Humphrey’s foresight to record his and Maddie’s trip in such an imaginative way. What’s next, Mr. Humphrey? Will you take another trip with Maddie, ...more

I liked the photographer's intro. He gave us a glimpse of what was going on in his life before he decided to take on this project. I think many can relate to the way he was feeling; not going forward in the world, what his point was in life.....I find his connection to Maddie endearing. She seems like a fun dog to be with. Maddie has good balance, being the size that she is and standing on small areas of surface. Some pictures made me laugh, how she had this expression of "can I get off of this ...more

Maddie on Things is one of my favorite websites ever. It always brings a smile to my face, and I love what Maddie's person does for homeless pets. The pictures in this book at least partially come from the website, but I didn't recognize all of them, so that was fun. They style and quality of the pictures makes me think the '60s or '70s even though they were taken within the last couple of years. The writing (what there is of it) isn't great, but the book really is about the photographs.

Maddie is on a trip. She is traveling across the United States with Theron. Theron is a photographer and is working on his next project – he is creating a photo journal of Maddie standing on things – cars, vegetables, people, houses, and bicycles. “Maddie on Things” is a charming travelogue of Theron Humphrey and his faithful companion, Maddie, a beautiful dog. Not just for dog-lovers, it is a book full of beautiful images that are sure to make anyone smile.

A lovely set of photos. Photographically their beautiful and meaningful and the idea and the journey was fantastic.

As a veterinarian it bothered me a little bit that Maddie seems to be stress squinting so much in the pictures, especially the earlier ones. I guess I felt better that she seemed to squint less over time and not in every picture. Her owner obviously loves her and she loves him - I'm just not sure this is as fun for her as he thinks it is.

While I liked the idea of doing something that you've been dreaming of doing and having an epiphany along the way--Maddie is a skilled and patient hound with a great sense of balance, so I should photograph her in all these places doing amazing fetes of balance and make it into a book; I am not impressed by the quality of the photography. However, it is an interesting idea, that may inspire some parodies....

Maddie the dog balances on all types of things as she traverses the country on a roadtrip with her owner. Dates and places appear in captions beneath each photo and selective commentary.

Definitely worth checking out, especially for dog lovers because, though the photos are set all around the country, Maddie is the focus and the photos in which she truly looks like she's smiling will brighten any day.

Recommended for dog lovers.
