(This is the review I shared on Amazon.)

When I read the blurb on the back cover, I was not sure what to expect. It didn't relay the same message as the description. It was confusing at first. When I downloaded the book, I knew it would involve or center around young people, but at the same time I expected a whole lot of adult conspiracies going on, weaving in and out of the story, and more of an adult-packed novel with elders trying to take over this world. I expected a lot of young victims from

Just finished reading this debut novel from author James Funfer. While not the usual genre that I choose, I had heard good things. Happily, I was not disappointed. It's an interesting take on a parallel period of history and society. Centered around the lives of four young people who are struggling to come to terms with their lives and their futures, the author cleverly weaves in a second story about war, love, and betrayal. It is the way in which these two threads are connected that I found rea ...more

Crystal Promise was on my bookshelf for a month or so, waiting for me to finish up the other novels I had on my (long) list of "to reads" that tend to take up much of my living space. When I finally did get to it, I didn't have any expectations as I knew that James Funfer was a new author, and to be honest--the back cover of the book didn't tell me very much about the plot.

In hindsight, I should have read Crystal Promise immediately. I enjoyed it more than I could have anticipated.

This is a great first outing by new author James Funfer. In Crystal Promise he writes very insightfully about young love, and coming of age in a country gripped by turmoil. The characters are real, flawed and easy to relate to. The action is interspersed with letters that help flesh out the world, and the terrible war it is still recovering from. From the slums of Avati Hill to the privileged halls of Central school, the world of Novem is rich and fully realized, with lessons to impart to reader ...more

I've read a lot of books over the past 20 years, and Crystal Promise was one of the most captivating stories I've ever read second only to Stephen King's Doctor Sleep. I couldn't put that book down for a second. I always said I felt that I had a deep connection with Crystara. One of my favorite parts was probably the letters between two characters from the past. James Funfer truly is a very unique author and I can't wait to read more of his works

I really enjoyed the depth of Mr. Funfer's characters. Each one was very unique, and yet relatable. The political/religious plot was fascinating, and was well written enough to not read like a textbook. I look forward to more of the bearded one's works.

Legit review still to come. First thoughts are that this book has affected me more than any other has in a long time. My brain is swimming, my heart is full and the feels run deep.

Thanks, James.
