This is a great read for someone that struggles reading the Bible. While its certainly not a replacement, it sums up the context and detail of all major bible stories in an easy to read manner, some of which can be easily misinterpreted when read straight from the Bible.

I love this book! Such an easy read in a clear understanding format. this was a mini-series on TV a couple years ago and I loved it then.

A Story of God and All of Us was quite a unique undertaking for authors Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. I think we all wish that some of the holes in the stories of the Bible could be filled in for us instead of being left to ones own interpretation. This book does just that in a way that makes sense. The stories are told how you think that they would and should be. The book is the companion to the ten hour miniseries The Bible which I have not yet seen but am now eager to!

I grew up reading the Bi

I gave this book 3 stars because the story was very beautifully written, but there were some typos here and there. I'm also not sure how accurate the stories are but the last portion of it is worthy of 5 stars.

Favorite quote: "I did what I did because I was certain that I was right. I was certain that I knew the will of God. As certain as you are now. But then Jesus came to me. Not in righteous anger or in judgements, but in love. His love. Without love we are nothing. Love is patient. Love is k

Very powerful read. As someone who is not really religious but believes in God, this was much easier to read than the Bible. It is a great story based off the TV mini-series, The Bible. I couldn't put it down and was finished in just over two days. It actually makes me want to try reading the Bible again. I had to subtract a star because of the abundance of grammar errors. There were numerous times where an entirely wrong word was used in place of what should have been used, which sometimes made ...more

It was an interesting way to read the stories of the Bible. I am not someone who believes in the Bible as the word of God, but I like to at least have some knowledge regarding religious texts. I would recommend reading this if you have tried to read the Bible but struggled to get through it.

I’m likely the worst person to review this book, as I am both a minister and an English teacher. From a theological point of view, the necessary detail manipulation of fictionalizing such a well-known work as The Holy Bible is fraught with potential pitfalls. In some other cultures and religions, such actions might result in a fatwa being issued. Here, they just tempered my enjoyment of the work, somewhat.

My bigger issue was the typos and/or editorial errors I found, such as syntax errors and mi

Though much of the Bible is written in a narrative format, it rarely indulges the senses to the degree that we are accustomed to in modern times. This book helps to set that cinematic, emotional backdrop for some of the most popular and important biblical scenes, fleshing each individual story and allowing a fictionalized peek into the minds of historically simplified characters. Even in its traditional format, these old stories can be compelling - but as told here, in driving

Great book for getting a quick glimpse at a lot of the major stories of the bible. It however, doesn't cover many smaller stories and sometimes moves quickly through other stories. It does insert how they felt the characters thought and felt about certain things which could definitely be up for discussion. Despite these things, it's a very good book that seems to be fairly accurate in what it does tell. It's definitely not a replacement for the bible but a very good start for many!

I am very thankful for the disclaimer in the beginning of this book. "This book is not supposed to be a new translation of the Bible". If that was it's original purpose, then there would be some problems.

The book is derived from the script for the TV show "The Bible". It attempts to cover the major characters in the Bible in a narrative format.

The writing I can tell takes after a script for Hollywood as everything that was written I can imagine in a sort of epic movie. It is because of this I d

In March 2013, History channel did something across 5 Sunday nights & 10 hours that hadn't been done before with a mini-series that tells the story of the Bible & brings the most important stories of that book to life in a way not seen before. Roma Downey & Mark Burnett's companion novel "A Story of All of Us" is the written companion to that series that turns the 10 hour mini series into an easy to read & enjoy 300+ page book. The book itself is well done & keeps to the them ...more

Having read the actual Bible, I was interested to see how the miniseries, and this book, measured up. The writing style was OK, a few too many times it felt like the teleplay notes/directions slipped in – “he was backlit from behind” – that sort of thing. Plus, it was kind of funny how many of the male characters (Samson, David, even Pontius) had very sensual descriptions of their glistening, rippling muscles – I felt like I was reading a Harlequin romance! Maybe Roma’s not gettin’ enough at hom ...more
I didn't have any interest in watching this miniseries, but when I learned there was a NOVELIZATION of it, I was morbidly curious and ILLed it.

Contrary to my ~expectation, it's not actually ridiculous over-the-top bad. There's not a lot that I'm really adamantly opposed to, though there are various things that make me uncomfortable, as well as various narrative changes that make me go, "But that's not how the story goes!"

There's a lot of telling rather than showing -- which given that this is a

The Story of GOD and All of Us mainly consists of the storyline Mark Burnett and Roma Downey used to script The Bible miniseries. When I picked the book up, I wondered if I would be looking at a script, but really the book is a fictionalized version of the stories.

Yes, many of the moments come directly from the histories we know as found in The Bible, but some liberties were taken so the story would flow in a fictionalized dramatization. It is basically the same format you will see within the m

The Book Is As Good As The Movie

I enjoyed the Kindle book as much as the video series. Like the videos, the book is a summary of the Bible, bringing to life such stories as Abraham's obedience to God, Joseph's brothers selling him into slavery, the Exodus, Samson's feats of strength, David and Goliath, Daniel in the lion's den and many others. I especially enjoyed the section detailing the life and teachings of Jesus, his death and resurrection and the birth and growth of the Christian church, w

A Quickie Review

Why do we need a novelization of a miniseries that is based on the bestselling book of all-time? While this adaptation is fairly well-written, it tries to cram too much into one volume. Though there are some nice details, it just doesn't have the appeal of seeing your favorite Bible stories come to life on the television screen. Even fans of Biblical historical fiction can do much better.

Content Concerns: Considering the source material, I won't do my usual summation; what I will

Good novelization of the Bible. I feel the book hit the highlights that those unfamiliar with the incredible word of God. But some things were not totally accurate and I feel some pretty important connecting points were left out. But this is Hollywood taking on something very personal and life changing to billions so forgiveness can be given.

Overall it was a well written book and I believe will help many people understand God and his people a little better.

FYI in the miniseries I love that Samso

My sister gave this to me as one of my Christmas presents. It is based on the TV epic "The Bible." This was Well written & a joy to read from beginning to end. Many days, I did not want to put it down , sometimes staying awake to finish a chapter and then another. I enjoyed how the book began with God creating the Universe, the World & all that it holds. I imagined standing next to Him as everything sprang into perfect existence at His command. This story carries you from that to Noah &a ...more

This book is okay, but as novelizations go, it really isn't very novel. Or entertaining, or captivating. If what you are looking for is a story that really feels real, that makes the Bible characters step off the page and that makes you care about them and the outcomes, then there are better choices out there (not, admittedly in only one book).

Here are some of my favorites: Sarah: A Novel by Marek Halter; The Red Tent by Anita Diamente; Zipporah, Wife of Moses, also by Marek Halter, Mary, Calle

This book was a great read if you aren't too familiar with bible stories. I was refreshed on some of the stories I thought I knew, but then I ended up learning a lot. This book tells the Bible stories in a novel format, and it is easy to read. I did not feel that the author was trying to write his own Bible, as some people have said. I feel they did a great job in collecting everything, and it being accurate. There were some parts that needed better editing, but other than that, I really enjoyed ...more

This is a great example of how to write a script for television. The writers readily admit this is what this is: a script that dramatizes various biblical stories. I didn't watch the series, so was curious about it.

The script does bring to life the biblical stories in a descriptive manner: he did this, then that, then they did this, and said this, etc. but it doesn't offer the psychological depth I want from a story that a novel can provide. So while I don't dislike this, I also couldn't finish

A Story of God and All of Us: A Novel Based on the Epic TV Miniseries "The Bible"
I loved how it is a mini Bible essentially, but still with a lot of meaning. From Adam and Eve to the Passion of Christ Mark Burnett did an amazing job detailing this book. A Story of God and All of Us is truly a page turner. I liked how their was never a dull moment in this book and would recommend this book to any young adult.
