Love can bring us together, but it can also tear us apart.
Dive into ten very different tales all sharing the theme of love; the good, the bad and the hideously ugly. Maternal love leads to obsession, infidelity leads to heartbreak and a prince ends up very disappointed with his lot.
You may have seen one or two of these characters before, but never in this light.

Victoria Pearson has given us a delightful collection of short stories - most so short I would call them "flash fiction" - of which each involves variations on the theme of love, and each has a twist, either of perspective, or expectations, or character. I found the writing to be very easy to read, the stories clever and thoroughly vetted. Most refreshingly, I found the reading experience to be very consistent; whereas in many collections you find a number of standouts and a number of duds, in ...more

The title of this short story collection genuinely sums up the contents. It made a refreshing change to pick up a collection of shorts and like them all. My favourite: “Welcome to the family – a kitten’s tale”. Some of these stories are humorous, some touchingly heartfelt, giving a good balance, and like all well written books it left me wanting more. ...more

This is an incredibly intriguing little anthology. Talent is very obviously at work here, but it is in raw form.

I was immediately put off by the writing. It was amateurish, going more along the lines of tell than show, as well as jarringly incongruent: words and phrases from opposite ends of various spectrums were thrown in, breaking down any context.

Context was both a huge issue and a huge catalyst in this book. Some of the stranger and more twisted tales very deliberately broke down any and

I was very intrigued by the premise of this short story collection. As a fan of classic fairy tales, I looked forward to reading love stories with the promise of a "twisted perspective". Unfortunately this collection did not live up to expectations for me.

My main problem was the writing style. Rather than a storytelling voice, I think the stories have more of a stream of consciousness kind of voice; particularly Another New Beginning and The Promise. Maybe that was the tone the author was going

This collection of 10 short stories captures love in it's many forms, and as the title suggests there are a few twists along the way to surprise and delight. The Nature of Loyalty will alter your perceptions of acceptable behaviour within different relationships and The Tall Tower and The Mis-sold Prince bring a new twist to two popular fairytales. My favourite story of the collection has to be Welcome to the Family - A Kitten's Tale, told from the POV of an older cat showing the new addition ...more

These short stories are exactly what the title tells you are: tales of the strangeness of love in all its facets. They include touching monologues, twisted fairy tales, and powerful portraits of remarkable characters from all walks of life.

They are stories full of poetry, compassion and sadness, sometimes with surprising endings, which have been careful placed in an order that lets the themes contrast with each other well.

I especially liked 'Heart of Ice' - an unusual and touching story about a

I liked this quick read of short stories. The title of the book fits it perfectly. My favorites would have to be The Nature of Loyalty (which surprised me), and The Mis-sold Prince (so totally twisted!). I think the shorter stories were the better ones, almost like a glimpse into someone's mind. The writing seemed more like a journal entry than story. The longer stories seemed to me like they didn't have a consistent flow. The journalistic style was interrupted with dialogue and seemed to lose ...more

I have to confess I'm not a great fan of short stories but this book proved to be an exception. If you took the writing skills and imagination of Jorge Borger, the strange humour of Mikhail Bulgakov, a pinch of the wit of Terry Pratchett and a big dose of originality you end up with a book like Strange Love. I read the stories at one sitting, then went back and read it again: reading more slowly with care. On the first read I though it was entertaining on the second read I realised this was the ...more

I loved this- so clever! Definitely worth a read... or two... or three.

If you like falling into a story as easily as falling into a dream, then this is the girl for you. She has a magical way with words; often her short stories read like extended poetry rather than narrative. Lush!

Summary: The book equivalent of luxury chocolate.

Love is tough to write. The balance between honest emotion and hallmark diabetic coma is a fine one but it's one that's skilfully executed in this little gem. The author has a way of changing her voice with each narrative that makes it not only fresh but also energetic and unpredictable

I finished Strange Love - Short Stories and Twisted Tales by Victoria Pearson a day or 2 ago, but I held off writing a review as I was not sure of how I felt about it, not to say that it was not a good read, because it was a good read, it was different then anything I have read before. I enjoy short stories and I love fairy tale retellings these stories have a dark and unique perspective, like the story from the cats point of view. My favourite story was The Promise, it grasps the enormity of ...more

Would like to say something positive but these stories were just not for me. I did not enjoy reading them. Typically I like dark and twisted but not these stories. I am sure others will enjoy but not my cup of the tea.

Some really inventive tales here. I particularly liked 'Heart of Ice' and the Rapunzel tale.

I wanted to like this book as much as Strange Worlds, but it didn't quite work as well for me. There are some great tales in this book, but a few could do with expanding and being more active in the writing, rather than a passive - a little bit more show and less tell. I did love the Kitten Tale though.
