An anthology built around the premise of natural disaster on a global scale naturally hits the spot with the environmentalist inside me. Admittedly, I keep looking for stories that offer solutions, not just dire warnings; but there's this tiny, masochistic bit of me which loves hurting in advance. Hurt now, it keeps telling me, so you won't hurt later ...

The most optimistic pieces in the bunch seem to be Colleen Anderson's intricate, intertwining "The Brown Woman" and Khristo Poshtakov's light-h

"Tempest Kings" is a fantastic short story by author William Highsmith found in the "Over the Brink: Tales of Environmental Disaster" published by Third Flatiron Anthologies.
In this story, Highsmith expertly weaves two stories, two time periods, and two kingdoms into parallel worlds. In 2022, a team is investigating a dig trying to piece together the civilization. At the same time, Highsmith takes the reader back to the Mayan culture of the 700's, which is in fact the dig of 2022.
